Just when the winter doldrums begin to dissipate, we get a chance to come together, stock up on gear, wonder at the odd, outrageous and arcane examples of photographic equipment and images that dealers have brought to the show from far and wide... and talk with folks about photography for an entire weekend!

Photographica, from the PHSNE website:
PHSNE sponsors the popular Photographica Show and Sale in the Boston area in the spring and fall. The Photographica Show offers members and the public an opportunity to browse and buy images, antique and usable cameras, equipment and ephemera. Some attend the Photographica Shows to sell photographic items to dealer-members throughout the world. The Photographica Shows are so popular that dealer space is sold out months in advance of the show date.

Not ringing prose, but a fitting description of what may be the only remaining two-day show in the states. I find I wait to buy things for months before this show, allowing myself the self righteous feeling of holding off on that e-bay buy just so I can talk to an actual person about what they have on the table in front of us before I plunk down my cash. In the end I get the item, a good conversation and, in some cases, a new friend.

This spring there will be another PHSNE Auction at 4:30 PM on Saturday the 13th, after the show floor closes. (See here for a listing of items to be auctioned. This list will be updated a few times, so check back frequently)

The details:
Photographica 79, the 40th Anniversary show!
April 13/14 2013
The Americal Center
Wakefeld, MA

The Americal Center is a very short walk from commuter rail and on the bus lines. There is free parking as well.

For the first 20 people who contact me, I have Golden Ducats–get-in-free cards for both days of the show. I'd love to give them out in person, so contact me and I'll truy to find a time when we can meet and I can hand them over, biut I am not above putting them in the mail.

Bumping time! I still have lots of get-in-free cards for anyone who contacts me. The normal admission is $5 a day.

See you there.

OK, Folks. Almost time. If you do make it to the show, drop by the table and sat Hi. We're usually at the far end of the right-hand loop, down toward the back of the room (upper right in the attached shot from last show). Dick Welch has had me packing my van all day and there are some really nice old cameras that are going to go for very little money. He has to clean out!

Ah well... Forget the message I just left you then. Sorry to have missed you.

The show has been good so far- better sales and interesting people wandering around buying gear. The auction was pretty active, with Leica gear going for much more than we anticipated.

Another good show, though Sunday was quiet for much of the afternoon. The auction total for the 100 items was over $10k. Big sellars at our table were brass lenses and wooden cameras sold to folks doing wet plate and old-lens photography. Nice to see the students from Boston Art Institute and New England School of Photography out and about. Spent a lot of time talking to Max, of Dead Link Removed - thought I'd give him a shout out. Young, enthusiastic, curious and talented, he was a bright spot in a room full of dinosaurs like me. In the end, I bought a few small bargains and sold stuff cheap to get my studio cleared out (well, sort of cleared out... it's all relative). Sorry not to see more APUGgers there, but there's always the Beach Party (June 22 this year- see separate thread).

Sorry I missed it! As it turned out, in now sick, most likely from being up so late that night so I'm glad I didn't stay for the event but glad it was a success!
