Photographic Vision Worshop At SECPS

I hope that nobody minds if I post a reminder about Michael A. Smith's and Paula Chamlee's workshop in March at Daytona Beach State College, Southeastern Center for Photographic Studies. There are a few spots remaining. I asked Michael about the level of expertise needed to take the workshop. Michael related that the workshop is as much about learning photographic vision as it is about learning the techniques that he and his wife use with reference to film development and contact printing. Indeed, he has had several digital photographers (!) take the workshop simply to learn Michael and Paula's "method" of developing one's unique vision. As Doug has stated, please see the detailed description of the workshop on Michael A. Smith and Paula Chamlee's web site. If it makes anyone else feel better, I am very much an amateur LF photography who is just starting to understand the "ins and outs" of using my camera, film and paper to depict a scene as I desire. Indeed, I might not even have a large number of prints to bring to the workshop. So, please don't feel intimidated or under-prepared! Others have told me that this workshop is, without doubt, the best workshop they have every taken and has far surpassed their expectations. Hope to see you there.

In their correspondence they mention giving a lecture at the School March 19th, Thursday evening, that is open to the public. So, even if you aren't attending the workshop, this will be a good opportunity to hear & talk with Michael & Paula.

My friend Jim took the workshop with me up in Pa. and he just started shooting 8x10 and the only thing he had was 6 prints unmounted to show M&P. He learned alot and was not intimated at all and still uses much of what M&P taught him. For myself I have shot LF for almost 40 years and learned a lot the first time i took it and hope to pick up more again.

For those looking for an area hotel, I just made reservation at Extended Stay Hotel located about 1 mile from the school (its address is 255 Bill France Blvd). Includes a kitchen and seems quite reasonable ($65). Now I have to get back to darkroom so have something to show ;-)

Yes, I have been in the darkroom as well Doug...well done with the room....had you received my email about who to contact about another nice place?

By the way, the hotel you will be staying at is within a few steps of a full service photography store here...paper, chemicals, etc., etc. Kingston Photo. Nice people who are anxious to help. They tend to have mostly Ilford "things", and not too much black and white sheet film; lots of choices with roll film. Also is virtually on the main drag with lots of restraurants close by as well. Looking forward to having some fun and wine with you and Michael.

I asked Michael Smith about the lecture times on Thursday, the 19th; and he doesn't know. The Dead Link Removed doesn't even list the lecture. Anybody know the times?

Not yet, but I will let you know as soon as I know. I spoke with Kevin Miller at the museum...they are very "laid back" about lectures hosting multiple lectures every week. Kevin assured me that the date is assured, and that he and Michael will talk about equipment, time, etc. Keep checking the museum site. I assure you that I am not at all happy with the lack of publicity. What a shame if the lecture is poorly attended. I guess we can all recall what we were like as students. With the emphasis on digital photography analog photographers must be looked upon as belonging to a small tribe of Luddites! Fingers crossed that the administration will "get it". If not, kiss any more analog workshops here good bye.

With the total absence of marketing, its almost as if the School wants traditional photography ventures to fail. Then they can point to poor attendance as justification for ignoring our media. Very disappointing. Oh well, at least we're getting one very good workshop in our area.

Outing?

We have a late registrant from my area, Jeff; who will be coming down for both the lecture & workshop. He uses a 5X7 Canham, and has expressed an interest in an outing Friday morning. Any others up to an outing, and preferred destination? Coincidentally, along with M&P, we're at the Extended Stay Hotel on Bill France Blvd.

Okay,
The four of us are having a great time at Michael and Paula's workshop. The amount of information we are receiving is unbelievable. I already forgot more than most people know. This is my second time taking it and I have found a lot of things he had gone over the first time was missed. It's like a great movie, and you see it for the second time and find all the things you missed the first time.
Like the they say, your lost is our gain.
