Mick Fagan and Steve Nicholls (chiller) come to mind for me. Both of them have been very helpful and shown me things I wouldn't have found out for myself. I have enjoyed the company of Graeme Hird, Kevin Caulfield and Old Biker Pete when we met at the beginning of last year.

I'd also like to mention Don Cardwell. He used to give a lot of useful advice re film & dev combinations.
Ole is another guy I've found to be very helpful & willing to share his knowledge regarding plate cameras. Much appreciated.

Steve is a good friend. We drove from Adelaide to Alice Springs, then spent a week together camping and fishing. He took over a week of his time to spend it driving me around the Outback, and providing me with company.

Lee Carmichael and Bob Carnie get my vote. They are totally different, one quiet and the other a bit noisy but both have a heart of gold and are very willing to share.

I second Mick Fagan as well! He was kind enough to send me a much needed prong for a Nikon lens I needed all the way from Austrailia to Florida, U.S. Thanks again Mick!

I have personally met some incredibly generous and awesome people from Apug!
Dave Wooten- a great person who gave a complete stranger a guided tour of the Las Vegas strip. He picked my friend and I up from the airport and took us to our hotel via the strip which took a least an hour or two . Wish I had spent more time with him but I was with a friend who was very very focused on some photos of the neon. Next time.
areaeleven-met me and PhotoBob for coffee when he came to our town and we had a blast talking shop and looking at postcards.
PhotoBob- met him from apug and has since become a good friend. He's generous with his time and is always ready to give helpful advice or lend you something you need. A Great Guy!
J.D. Callow- had the pleasure of meeting him in Vancouver for a day and he was a hoot to hang around!
the banana- met him with J.D.Callow in Vancouver for the day and it was so much fun to just walk around Granville Island, shoot some photos, go for lunch, and shoot the sh...t about photography. Will post some photos of that adventure.

I've met so many people through both the postcard exchange and the blind print exchange. It's been such a good experience being on apug. I hope to meet many more people in person especially when I can afford to travel.

I was very pleased to meet Sean at the APUG conference and I have to say his humbleness was very striking. This site now has over 20,000 members and I can't imagine the details that he has to deal with.
Personally , JD Callow, Les Mclean, Dinesh and all the others who have graced our doors make this site very valuable to me, and has opened my eyes to the potential of meeting new APUGers.

Kim Kirkpatrick

I first learned B&W darkroom technique through a course offered via the Smithsonian Resident Associate program in Washington D.C.

The instructor I had for this course was, frankly, terrible. Fortunately, Kim was one of the supervisors of the Open Darkroom sessions also offered through the program and he was a HUGE help to me getting things back on an even keel and filling in the considerable gaps left by the poorly-taught course I had taken. Just a humble, if taciturn guy, who is extremely helpful in a non-invasive way.

He's also a well-known color analog photographer whose utilization of bokeh in his compositions is considered by some to be revolutionary. I had no knowledge of that, however, at the time. Sadly, it appears that a former assistant of his has been riffing on his work for years and become very successful in doing so...

I just purchased my first photographic enlarger last week - and as far as I'm concerned - that's owing to Kim's efforts.

As far as I know, he's still manning the fort at the Smithsonian's Open Darkroom on Saturday afternoons...

Aw, Gee Whiz, Jeremy, we love you too. You might not be the photographer you "are" without our, uh, influence, but I bet you'd still be a good one - just perhaps going in a slightly different direction.

I agree with Jeremy about the effect the project has had on me, too. I have greatly benefited from meeting many other apuggers, but especially Jeremy, Matt, Lee and Mike, who are now my collaborators and make me better. There is no substitute for being around talented people - it makes one want to be even better.

Without apug, I would never have met Les McLean, much less actually spent time in his home (a mixed blessing, but that's another story ). Or Clay Harman, who also invited a whole bunch of us to his home, where I met even more people!

As for the original post (jovo on Brian Kosoff) I have not met Brian, but he has spent some time with me in the chatroom and I really appreciated one day where he shared some methods! I really admire his work - I've gotten to see it in person via a local gallery - and I am looking forward to meeting him next year if he comes here for a scheduled solo show at said gallery.

And, I routinely talk via the chatroom to England, Europe, Australia, and who knows where else! Hans, Luis, Nicole, Ann, et al, you know who you are!

Im Based in australia the industry is small and word spreads like a wild fire. when a photographer steps out of line everyone hears about it. ive been very lucky to surround myself with really nice photographers who use my lab. They help me alot and If I can help them Im only too happy.Anyhow Some of the Photographers who know me and come on here will hopefully read this.
They know who they are and well um thanks for your endless support.

I've been fortunate to meet some wonderful photographers who also happen to be very famous.

Tillman Crane is one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet - someone you can really enjoy spending time with. And his photography is truly inspirational.

Ernestine Rubin is very famous in Europe and in the "high art" circles in New York, but less so among traditional photographers with more of a technical bent. But she is a very warm person who truly enjoys teaching, and who takes a very personalized approach with her students. And she is great fun to be with.

Bill Abranowicz got his start as George Tice's printer, and eventually made a name for himself as an advertising and commercial photographer. He has been associated with Martha Stewart Living forever, and the overall graphic style of the magazine appears to have been derived from Bill's personal style of imagery.

Someone whose name appeared in a thread recently is Ray Yaros. Ray is a New Jersey-based photographer who does some of the most beautiful LF landscape work being done today. And he is another great guy to hang with.

While I have not had the pleasure of meeting many photographers from APUG I did attend Per Volquartz's Puget Sound Workshop this summer. Per shared his knowlege and experiences freely and was willing to do so sometimes late into the night. He actually seemed to get energized the more he shared....he's a great guy.

I've only met John Callow and David Goldfarb in person, and the two lads are most cheerful characters! John has the fastest city walking trot I've ever known and a beautiful mind, and I wish I had David as a professor during my BA.

Though I have not met him, it goes without saying that Ron Mowrey (Photo Engineer) is an outstanding example of scientific integrity and online generosity. I hope to drop by Rochester one day (I plan to visit the George Eastman House at some point) and enjoy the grey skies.

Oh, and Sparky, your girlfriend was most kind to drop by my exhibit last April!
