Photographer's Monuments, Plaques and Statues

In another thread on Fay Godwin's Soup, the discussion has turned to Bert Hardy and have posted this link to a plaque in London to honour the great man.

That got me thinking, are there many other such public celebrations to photographer's round the world?

One I posted about years ago is the statue of Victor Hasselblad in Gottenburg, though technically he is not really known for his photography.

Howe and when

James Wong Howe has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was a still photographer before he he became an Oscar-winning cinematographer.

Victor Hasselblad was actually a good photographer but his photographs are outfamed by his cameras. He started designing cameras because because he couldn't find the one he wanted on the market.

Interesting. Do you know if any of his work is online? Naturally when searching for JWH + photography, it all relates to his role as DOP.

A top Hollywood actress of the time (silent films), Mary Miles Minter, had a problem. She had pale blue eyes and with the kind of film being used for movies at that time, her eyes would be a big blank. Howe surrounded the lens on his still camera with dark cloth (in effect, he reflected "dark" into her eyes, not light) and she loved the photos and made him her personal still photographer. That gave him a boost to become a cinematographer. Not that easy for a guy born in China in those days.

Gordon Parks, who was a staff photographer and writer for Life Magazine, has his name on two schools. He also directed motion pictures played piano in a sporting house (the latter was his first job).

There NOW is a marker on the grave of Frederick Scott Archer at Kensal Green cemetery in London. FSA's grave was almost lost, but it was re-discovered and the headstone restored in 2010.

Daguerre has monuments in multiple places, including a big one here in Washington DC outside the National Portrait Gallery.

Joseph Nicephore Niepce has a big statue in Chalon-sur-Saone, down the street from the Musee Nicephore Niepce.
