And thanks to you Bill - I hadn't read that before.
My extremely brief encounter with Karsh - he winked at me when I attempted to photograph him before one of his large group presentations - indicated to me that he would be great to have at a dinner party!
A much better experience than the one my (newly employed on the order desk by Canadian Kodak) Dad had, who got yelled at by him when the shipping department screwed up one of his orders .

I wonder how Nobuyoshi Araki and Helmut Newton would've gotten along. I gather that Araki is quite the character.

Just to show I wasn't making it up. Of course he is no longer with us an I no longer have the beard and my hair is totally gray.. My wife is next to me and the other woman was in charge of the event.

He could be a real snob and was quite short tempered with his subordinates, although charming to his subjects.

I went to my bookshelf and chose based upon their images, the fact i don't have a real understanding of who they are, and thought might be wonderful over dinner.

I first thought w. eugene smith, (one of the greats), would make the list - he would be fascinating. My concern he might be a bit irascible and self-centered. maybe I know to much about him?

Looks like i am the outlier by a BIG Margin.

o.k... I'd add the Duke of Abruzzi (29 January 1873 – 18 March 1933) to my list.... a huge world adventurer as well as a Naval Commander.

yup, whiskey and jazz... i read the bio by jim hughes, did the cd's by david young and the npr series on the jazz loft - all really great - as well as other sundry articles. i'm sure your formula would cure any irascibility, especially if you also imbibing!

Just his life's timeline is fascinating.
If he had just lived until 1950.
He was on the brink of....... Everything

Spain/Civil War .....
Man-Oh-Man. Talk about photography

Berlin Olympics .....
Again, "photography" hardly is a big enough word

1939 Poland
1940 France
June 1941 Russia
December 1941 Pearl Harbor
1945 Hiroshima Japan

The end of mans worst man-made disaster and the coming of Television and Solid State electronics.
I can remember, circa 1970, my Father and Mom questioning the "Necessity" of the push-button telephone.
Good Lord, talk about "small potatoes"

He was born during the height of slavery in the usa and that country's Civil War.
He saw ... "The war to end all wars".
and then The Treaty of Versailles.
He witnessed the coming of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler.
He saw the airplane evolve from wood spars and cloth with 2 wings to all metal monoplanes

He, and everyone of his age, had the pleasure of experiencing The Great Depression.
The changes he saw in the world, were phenomenal.
Looking back ..... excuse the cliche..... through history's lens, some decades seemed like centuries

I like the guest list. I love Dave Heath. But mind that he was a loner and very difficult character too getting easily angry!
Not so sure would be the soul of the dinner!
