Have you ever gone in search of a location used by a photographer you admire? I went in search for the location of this picture: -

The picture was taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson in Tralee, in Southern Ireland in 1951. I showed the picture to various people in Tralee and they were able to point me to the location, which was now completely changed. However, an interesting exercise.

Haven't done it yet, but planning on it after realizing where this picture was taken:
Josef Koudelka, 'France, Parc de Sceaux', 1987

I used to walk in that park almost daily when I lived nearby, but never knew this was taken there. Maybe I'll wait for a snowfall too...

Yes, many times.

For example, this is an image from Friedlander's "Factory Valleys, 1980." I did find the church and photographed it below.
The church exterior was also seen in the movie "Deerhunter" from 1978.

I have also used Google Street View to find locations. For example this Ernst Haas image:

I was in Kansas City in 2022 and my friend drove me to this location. Lee Friedlander Kansas City 1965

Close to where Mr. Friedlander was standing. I was hoping the weeds would still grow there, but it's been gentrified.

Sometimes I'll have a particular image in mind when I'm creating one myself. For example I always liked "Bomb Destroyed Vehicle and Cone Rock by Richard Misrach"

The 11th Street Cleaners building was torn down and a parking lot is there now. The other obvious change is that an esplanade was added and a blooming fruit tree obstructs the former view. If you would like Google Street View, the address is 511 W. 11th Street, KC,MO.

This was taken by my Dad ~ 3/4 of a century ago, in Stanley Park, in Vancouver, BC.
I've stood there, and could take the same shot - thousands/millions of tourists have over the decades - but a huge percentage of the trees are no longer visible, the cars are no longer 1940s vintage, and there have been three lanes on the bridge for a very long time.
The toll booths went in the 1970s.

So many come to mind, starting with W. Eugene Smith's Spanish Village. Wonder what it looks like now, if it still exists.

Also, this Robert Frank photo in L.A.

I keep wondering if this house, photographed in 1974 in Colorado Springs by Robert Adams, is still standing.

Would also love to be at the exact spot this 1972 photo was taken, but I think that ship has sailed for me...

Once I put my tripod in one of Ansel’s locations. San Xavier del Bac in Tucson. And again in Tumacacori. They were not satisfying experiences. In both locations, after getting that out of my system I actually did some photography.

I have, about 400 times, but the motivation was not so much to follow photographers I admire, but the actual scene, and to see the changes, if any, over time. For awhile I was posting these on a thread in the large format photography forum site, called "Tripod Holes". It has been a while since I posted there, so maybe I will add some soon.

I wonder if the earth view was turned in such a way as to satisfy us Northern Hemisphere dwellers? It seems like the orientation of the Apollo ship would be random. Such an amazing Kodak (and Hasselblad/Zeiss) moment.

When I lived in Santa Fe, I drove up to Hernandez, New Mexico. This is where Ansel Adams shot his famous "Moonrise" photograph. It is maybe 30 miles north of Santa Fe. Adams photographed the church, cemetery, and part of the village from the highway. None of the stuff in his photo is visible from the highway anymore because of new stuff built along the highway. He photographed from the back side of the church; I went into the village of Hernandez and photographed it from the front.

I don't think I've been anywhere that any well-known photo was taken.

I ran across this in Mitla Mexico, I knew it to be one of Ed Weston's subjects.

In a similar vein, together with my sister, I sometimes figure out the spots where our dad took some of the family photos. Most of the time we know, of course. Sometimes, it takes some detective work to figure it out. It's fun when we finally figure it out and manage to "take the same shot" using Google Street View.

I have always admired that image. How simple, how perfect. Koudelka is a brilliant photographer.
