That was one of the things I missed while I was in SF this past weekend. I did get to stop by Pier 24 (http://www.pier24.org) which is a really cool photo museum. Their current show is called HERE - the theme is San Francisco themed photographs, be it images taken of the Bay area or by photographers from the Bay area. Either way it's a really neat show - they have a set of the Muybridge 360 degree panorama images he took from the approximate location of the Mark Hopkins Hotel before the hotel was built, shown in parallel with the Mark Klett series replicating the photographs in the 1980s. Also on display are a series of images from the construction of the Oakland Bay Bridge, a room of Westons and Ruth Bernhards nudes, an impressive set of Carleton Watkins mammoth-plate albumen prints, a tribute to Larry Sultan, and works by Todd Hido, Richard Misrach, Henry Wessel, Arnold Genthe, Dorothea Lange, Johan Hagemeyer and Robert Frank among others. There are two quirks to the museum - admission is free, but by appointment in a two-hour block, and there is NO descriptive text anywhere on the walls or in the exhibition catalog except to label who is in which room (catalog only - there is a number on the floor of the room so you can compare it to the floor plan in the catalog). Some people might find this absolutely distracting - I think in the end it's actually liberating because it makes you the viewer think about what you're seeing and how you interpret it rather than forcing some preconceived ideas on you.
