Photo Workshops at the Valley Photo Center

For those of you that may be interested (and I know it is kinda short notice - but we just received a copuple of late confirmations) the Valley Photo Center in Springfield is having some workshops next Sat June 18th and a reception for the current exhibit at 4:30 pm. All workshops are free.
I am listing all workshops - even though a few are for digi-photogs. Some of the others may be of interest to APUG'ers.
Between the workshops and the reception we will have some guest speakers:
Antonin Kratochvil, Essdras Suarez and Katie McMahon will discuss "Photography in A War Zone."
Here is the workshop breakdown:
Valley Photo Center announces Photofest workshops for June 18

Eight free workshops are scheduled for Saturday, June 18 at Photofest at the Valley Photo Center. The workshops are part of a day long event that will also include a panel discussion about photography in a war zone and an evening reception in the gallery. All of this is part of Speed : Valley Portfolio III sponsored by Western Massachusetts Electric; a month long exhibit from June 8 through July 8. Workshops are as follows:

Robert Floyd - Introduction to Digital Photography dealing with capturing the image.

Stuart Wetherbe - Introduction to Photoshop. This workshop will work off the Robert Floyd workshop and will deal with the images that have been recorded and working with them in Adobe Photoshop.

Nancy Bryant and Stuart Wetherbe - A discussion of the many options for printing your digital images.

Mathew Harrison - Legal issues in photography - A look at copyright, model releases, privacy interests, and other legalities photographers should know. Matthew Harrison is a recent cum laude graduate from Western New England Law School, and is the founder of FNS Studios in Indian Orchard.

Keith Sikes- Promoting Your Work- The founder of the Valley Photo Center gives tips on self promotion to make your work stand above the many others vying for public attention. Sikes is also marketing director for Turley Publications

Christine Pratt and Michael Jacobson-Hardy - Black and White: Where is it headed? This roundtable discussion will address the future of Black and White photography.

Ted Harris and Richard Ritter - Large Format Photography - They will have several different types and sizes of large format cameras setup and will be prepared to discuss their uses and advantages. They will bring some Polaroid film so that we can demonstrate some of the more important uses of large format cameras (e.g. correcting distortion using movements). This is presented by Fine Focus Workshops.

Clayton Sibley - Secrets of Nature Photography - A slide presentation with discussion of composition, equipment and exposure.

The schedule is finalized, the workshops set and the round table speakers prepped. Don't miss out on a day of free photography, this Saturday, June 18. The Valley Photo Center presents Photofest, sponsored by WMECO. The day will begin at 9:00am with registration. Workshops begin at 10:00am and the "Photography In A War Zone" panel discussion and slide show beginning at 2:15 followed by a reception in the gallery for the Speed: Valley Portfolio III exhibit.

Christine Pratt - Black and White: Where is it headed? Christine Pratt of Dark Horse Photographics in Florence, MA leads a panel discussion regarding the future of Black and White photography.Questions to be considered are :
1.)What is the future of traditional B&W?
a.)Will film, paper, and chemistry continue to be supported by manufacturers?
b.)Will clients perceive it as more valuable than digital?
c.)How can traditional B&W photographers market themselves as unique?
2.)What are the benefits and disadvantages of both traditional and digital B&W?
a.)What is the print longevity of the newer materials? How about the paper surfaces available?
b.)What methods integrate the old processes with the new?
c.)Is it better to scan film or shoot digitally?

And much more...! A similar discussion at the last Photofest was so lively we could have kept on going another hour at least!!

Photography In A War Zone

The Valley Photo Center announces that Lou Jones and Bradley Clift have been added to the "Photography In A War Zone" panel discussion and slide show. The panel is part of the all-day Photofest program June 18. The panel will take place from 2:15 to 4:15 at the Valley Photo Center in Tower Square.



They are joined on the panel by Essdras Suarez, who won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for spot news for his work with the Columbine School tragedy for the Rocky Mountain News. He has since become a fixture at the Boston Globe, where he has covered Haiti, Somalia and Iraq, among many other assignments.



Bradley Clift is a photojournalist for the Hartford Courant and was recently arrested and held captive for two weeks in Sudan. He brings us images from his experiences.



Lou Jones began his career photographing head hunters in Borneo and Gorillas in Central America. He will bring his images from his work in El Salvador. Most recently, Jones has published a book titled "Final Exposure, Portraits From Death Row".



Also appearing on the panel is newcomer Katie McMahon, fresh from commencement at Boston University. She is already a staffer at the Lawrence Eagle Tribune and part-time contributor to the Boston Globe. Last year she spent a semester in Jordan documenting the life of people in the Palestinian and Iraqi refugee camps.



Antonin Kratochvil, who was to appear on the panel, was dispatched to the Congo Thursday and promises to participate in a future VPC event.

The Reception

Photofest caps off with a celebration at 4:30 p.m. in the Valley Photo Center Gallery. Performing as part of the Photo Center’s Mentors in Music program is a young Springfield group, The Prozacs, joined by the Valley All-Stars, featuring Eric Bascom, Peter J. Newland and Tommy Ardolino. This program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Springfield Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
