Who was the maker of Phillips enlargers. I am just trying to find a little info on one because I may like to alter one to a 5x7..Thanks..Evan Clarke

I don't really know either. But why don't you think Phillips make the enlarger themselves?

I am just trying to find the exact name of the company for search purposes. I don't think it is the giant electronics company. From what I can ascertain they haven't been made since the early 1980s..EC

It's Philips with one "l" and they were also rebranded as Paterson (with one "t") enlargers. I had one for a while, and it was quite a nice enlarger, with some nice features like a glass neg carrier with masking blades as the standard carrier and a tilting neg stage and the head had a 45-degree mirror to keep the neg cool.

I can get a nice 4x5 for a song ($29) and would like to possibly modify it so I can enlarge my 5x7 negs.I need to find a mechanical drawing to see if it is possible. Was it built in England??..Thanks..EC

I'm fairly sure they were made in the UK.

Are you talking about a PCS2000 or a PCS130? (I have two PCS2000s) The PCS2000, at least, wouldn't be a good choice for such modification, as the head assembly is one (fairly complicated) unit. That's the nice thing about Philips enlargers, the tri-bulb/filter additive system, with the requisit fancy electronics. IMHO a 4x5 beseler, omega, de vere, durst...would be much better choices for such a modification. For example, I have on old De Vere 504 that I'm not using. Since you live close by, you could have it. The only downside is that it's bigger than the Philips, but on the otherhand, you're talking 5x7 where solidity is important. I might also have a Durst L1000 chassis that you could use, but I might have thrown that out already.

I'm a new owner of a PCS 2000, it wouldn't be physically possible to enlarge the openings enough to accomodate 4x5, let alone 5x7. Not sure about the 130, but in that it takes the same carrier as a PCS 2000, it wouldn't seem feasible.
OTH, any thoughts of opening a PCS 2000 enough for 6x7 (cm)?
Mine was new in the box, but the 6x6 mixing box is missing, so I need to fabricate some innards anyway.

A 2000 and that is what I was curious about. I have been trying to lay my hands on a Beseler 810V XL but I can't pay a King's ransom. They are pretty scarce..Evan CLarke

Geez, Peter, I am getting braindead, I din't read the second half of the post. I was thiking about adapting something the same way the Beseler 4x5s are done and maybe using just the chassis and using a cold light. A little bigger might be OK, would it give a little more height??..Thanks..Evan

I have a new in box Philips Color Analyser PCA 060 and the instructions state "Made in Holland". Looks decent although I never used as I already have two Beseler analysers.

Yes, this would definitely give more height. The column is about 1.5 feet taller then that Philips (going from memory.) You would still have to make/modify a head. The head that comes with the 504 only covers 4x5. The column and lens/head stages, though, are the same, or at least very similar, as the 8x10 De Vere's. This enlarger is packed away, and I'm going to be very busy over the next couple of days; but when I get the chance, I'll take it out, take some pictures... I would be happy to give it to you, on the condition that if you don't use it, that you return it. (It spent 5 years at a friend's house until he gave up the hobby for motorcycling.)

I I remember correctly, the PCS 2000 medium format mixing box covers 6x7mm, as does the glass carrier. I have a manual somewhere... My Philips enlargers are currently lent to friends. There is a website about these enlargers. A little Googling should pull it up.

The Philips 2000 had a set of three lamps that projected into a separate mixing box, and the light source and enlarger were a unit.

The Philips PCS130 enlarger came with a standard enlarger lamp or you could install the PCS150 light source, which shot three lamps into a mixing chamber, illuminating a plastic disc at the end. This plastic disc seated in the enlarger about where the bottom of the standard lamp would be. This arrangement allowed the PCS 150 light source to be placed onto other enlargers with adapter kits that were sold at the time the Philips enlargers were made. I have a kit for an Omega D5, but I recall kits for other Omega and Beseler enlargers. If you can find a way to mount the PCS 150 at the same place as a standard lamp on these enlargers, it should work well.

Using the light source for the PCS 2000 will require that you build your own mixing box and housing to mount them on other enlargers.

(I found that the standard Philips kit for the PCS 150 + Omega D5, which had acrylic "light pipes" for efficiency, had poor blending of the colors, so I made my own housing to seat the PCS 150 disc where the standard lamp falls, and this works well.)

The film carrier opens to 6x7 (barely), but the opening in the head above the carrier is about 6.5 cm square. Don't know about the mixing box, since the large one is missing, the one I have is labeled 24x36. All the literature with it states that it's capacity is 6x6. From the reading I've done, the 130 apparently goes up to 6x7, using the same carrier. I found the yahoo group dedicated to the Phillips tri light enlargers, and joined, but haven't posted the question there.
I haven't had a chance to try a print with it, but from what I've seen I like the enlarger. I really like the remote (from the head) color control and built-in timer.
