BERKELEY- June 25- “Nocturnal Sunrise”, a large-scale black and white photography exhibition by Philip Ringler. opens June 25 at the John F. Kennedy University Arts and Consciousness Gallery in Berkeley. Ringler’s photographs have been described by Bay Area art critics as “hypnotic”, “elegant”, and “haunting”.
“Nocturnal Sunrise” challenges the viewer to explore the depths of human consciousness: nightmares, addiction, abandonment, suffering, and ultimately redemption. Ringler uses technically ambitious development processes to create 40”x60” silver gelatin prints on thick textured fiber paper.

Ringler photographed in diverse environments, ranging from crumbling post-Katrina New Orleans to abandoned resorts in French Polynesia, wintry rural Michigan, as well as museums of oddities and Bay Area amusement parks. His stark photographs transcend both location and time; they converge as a dramatic epic poem, a hymn to the human spirit’s ability to endure and transform all difficulties.

Philip Ringler, a Bay Area native, has worked as a professional photographer since 1995. He is also a photographic educator, writer, curator and musician. He holds a BFA in photography from California State University, East Bay and is an MFA candidate at John F. Kennedy University’s Arts and Consciousness program, Berkeley, Calif.
