hi Clive

agora has been around for a long time and seem to be doing OK.
they have a very large client list / stable of collectors and allow people who can afford it
a place to show, AND use their client base .. I thought about using them to promote
some of my work a years ago, but it is too expensive for me .. and matting framing is $
and the 50% commission, while the same as some other established galleries charge
for "rent"... its all more than I could ( and can ) afford ..

if stuff is gallery matted, framed ready to hang, $$ was burning a hole in my pocket
it would have been worth it.

i've friends i used to part own a gallery with and someone i know through them
used to own a boutique gallery like the agora but in the boston area. he was never
looking for things to put on the walls, and there seemed to be a large base of musical-artists
( like peter wolf and others in the area ) who were happy to pay him $$ to have a show.

I visited his gallery in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney over 10 years ago and from memory he may have been lurking in the store that day. My recollection was he seemed to be doing well selling Australian souvenirs to well-heeled tourists and his style was half a notch better than Ken Duncan whose model he seemed to be aping and has since taken global - but let's not start a hate on Ken Duncan thread! Australians will be familiar if not heartily sick of Duncans' all too familiar slightly leaning, slightly fading, panoramic hero shots of somewhere pretty in Australia, hanging from a wall near you. To give Ken his due he has been very supportive of the rights of photographers to shoot in public places without harassment or bureaucratic approvals and fees. I'm not sure I've come across any articles about Peter's redeeming features, but good luck to him!
