Just found out that Ilford has included 50 foot rolls of HP5 on this year's limited run.

Wow that's interesting and worthy of a bump. Got to be somebody with a 70mm back around somewhere who could use it. Doesn't 70mm fit some old folders as well?

Two questions:
1) The 70mm film does not have paper backing. Correct?
2) Wouldn't the old folders mentioned have [light leaking] frame counter windows...requiring paper backing?

Just put tape over the red window should the film not have a backing (I don't believe it does).

I have purchased and measured on old roll of Ilford 116 and the width of the film was 68.75mm. was this incorrect? The backing paper was 70.3mm.

Sure!
But without the frame numbers on the backing paper, (showing through the window),
proper frame advancing/spacing is a bit difficult...at best.
And, without the thickness of both the film and backing paper against the pressure plate,
the film may not lay flat and firm in the film plane.

Just saying!
A few too many hoops to jump through. But, if you already own one of these cameras,
then I do understand that a few people will be happy to go the extra mile to be able to
shoot with some fresh film...much like those who cut down 120 film for 127 cameras.

I see they're also offering rolls of HP5 in 127 and 122 format. Best hang on to any backing papers you might have around. They are also making available 30.5m rolls of 120 backing paper but I presume they'd not have printing on?

I was just notified by Freestyle Photo that Ilford will not be making the 70mm film this year. Bummer! They refunded my money. Something about not enough rolls ordered.
