Pentax's new film camera project will produce "a brand-new, manual winding" compact camera, according to an interview in a Japanese magazine.

Yes, because a compact but good performing 35mm camera is *exactly* what the majority of the younger folk getting into film want to buy. Manual winding will also mean either a button cell or no battery at all which is a consideration younger folk have.

Of all the cameras I get out and about with, the ones that draw attention from teenagers and people in their 20s are the pocketable ones. And there is something intensely satisfying about composing a shot, setting the exposure, firing the shutter and completing the process by using the winding lever. It also leaves onlookers in no doubt.,.....you are shooting film.

It'll be interesting to see if they come up with a fixed focus, auto focus or manual focus design. But these youngsters shooting film...at least from what I can tell having met just a few....want something a little more than "press the screen on your phone to take a photo"....but less complicated than a SLR. At least to begin with.

As long as it's a lever and not a wheel.

@Cholentpot Yeah I'd agree it needs to be a lever. That's the key to the whole thing of winding the film. The action and the view for onlookers. It's satisfying to perform the action and leaves those around you in no doubt......that person is shooting film.

I never really liked the wind in my XA series camera. It just doesn't feel that great.

People, what you are asking for is the incredible, the amazing, the one and only Ricoh FF1 (and FF1-S, and Sears MINI 35 Programmed).

Tiny, super lens, 35mm, lever wind. or a Leica M7 with Lomo Minitar 32....

By the way, interesting that this thread was brought up as I was wondering what was going on since the original announcement last year.

It seems they are still spit balling ideas.

I believe that the first video made it very clear that we're at least 2-3 years away from seeing any products available. I'm surprised we've got an update this quickly.

if they could do that mini 35 as a m42 mount...
