Pentax lens choices in 24mm and 28mm.

My K1000 is my roll around the truck and carry b&w camera and I have the standard 50mm F2 on it. I'd like to supplement with a second wider lens that doesn't cost more then the body but has decent performance. Open to any 3rd party lenses.

I have used just about all of the 28mm Pentax lenses and have found that the M28/3.5 is by far the best and usually the cheapest. However, both 28mm and 24mm lenses tend to sell for quite a bit of money of late because they function as a standard lens for the Pentax DSLRs.

I can thoroughly recommend the Pentax M f2.8 28mm, another good option is the Tamron f2.5 28mm Adaptall 2 lens. I have both and they are excellent lenses.

From personal experience f3.5 lenses are a little restrictive in low light situations, the extra stop makes a huge differance.

A 28mm is immensely practical as a second lens and compliments a 50mm very well. I used a 24mm lens and found it was too great a jump compared to a standard lens, and wanted something in between. So I now use 50mm, 28mm & 17mm which is a great combination.

In the Pentax 28s the f3.5s are generally a little sharper than the f2.8s, and sell for less money. Only you know if you need that extra half stop of speed...

I like the K version of the f3.5 particularly, but the A and the M are also excellent. In the f2.8s, I like the A best. The A will cost you more because it integrates better with a modern Pentax DSLR.

My favourite among the 24s is the f2.8 A.

All the Pentax 28s and 24s are good lenses though, and you'll be happy with any of them.

I have an m42 28mm f2 made by Mamiya that I love. Got it for free on an old Praktica body I got off ebay for $10. Not sure what the going rate is, but I cant imagine they'd be too expensive.

I have a Sigma KA mount f2.8 28mm. I've not used it much, but it seems adequate. It has 'macro' focusing which is quite useful for extreme foreground shots.

Good lens in a K mount. Kiron isn't well known, but made exellent lenses back when.

I'll go along with the suggestion that the 28 f3.5 is a good 'un but from experience would say the K30mm is even better!

If you shoot B&W then the best "bang for the buck" in 24mm is the Sigma f2.8 but if used for colour it can overexpose a little and give "thin" looking transparencies.
