Does anyone know if a film advance problem for slipping is a common problem and can it be fixed without sending in for repair?

If film is not loaded you must advance the frame counter by hand (or with the "6x7 key" tool) to at least #1 before the film advance will engage.

It's probably the most common serious fault in this camera. It may require parts to effect the repair - it's likely within the friction shaft system.

Have you checked the tension on the left spool side?
Mine now has too much tension which puts undue strain on the winding mechanism.
Apparently it's damped to keep the film flat but seizes over time.
There's a repair video somewhere within the bowels of youtube's Pentax 67 cache for the DIY'ers.
