Read this morning the news of the death of photographer Paul Ickovic, a name that was new to me.
He seemed like quite the character.

One Thing Leads to Another. I am a curious animal. Why photography? For one it gives me the excuse to be anywhere anytime. That’s my job. The only continuous, consistent compass in my life. I am not interested in stories with a beginning and an end. I prefer the ambiguous terrain that sparks an emotion. I wonder what came before and after I enter the scene and trip the shutter. I don’t want to be living on a chess board analyzing my every move. Spontaneity and impulse are everything. Poker is more my game. Risk and chance whet my appetite, and that is how I extract nourishment. -- Paul Ickovic

Paul Ickovic, Photographer at Home on the Street, Dies at 79 (Published 2023)
His camera captured the variety of the human experience, but changing tastes in photography kept him from the acclaim he sought — as did his own idiosyncrasies.

Photographs, drawings and writing by Czech artist Paul Ickovic, author of Kafka's Grave and Nicholas & The Magic Box. Classic documentary and street photography in the tradition of Cartier-Bresson and Kertész, by a modern master of 35mm Leica camerawork and the black and white print.
