A note from Michael Mansfield, President of Maine Media:

Maine Media’s great friend and mentor, Paul Caponigro, passed away over this past weekend. Paul was a giant in the history of photography, the living embodiment of the awe so often discovered in printed images. My time with him has been all too brief, but it was easy to recognize the profound contributions he made to all of us working with a camera, and the deep connections he had with many photographers. Paul will be deeply missed, but most importantly, the Maine Media community will continue to celebrate the light that he shared with all of us.

The Chair of Maine Media's photography program, Kari Wehrs, offered me a few words which I'm including here:

"Paul’s photographs let us move between spaces. They invite us to worlds within worlds within worlds. Spaces are physical, spiritual…somewhere in between, and in flux. Some of his photographs whisper a message and to our delight, that message might allow us to enter our emotional and intellectual selves, though with a new note, or with the feeling that a page has just been turned.

Conversations with Paul often made me feel just as amazed as I felt with his photographs. He could completely make me laugh, and I swear that I could see an extra little sparkle in his eyes when he felt filled up by company in the room. He could also make statements, or tell stories, that seemed to find ways to embed themselves in my thoughts. I’m talking about one-liners that would sink so deeply into your being, that you’d continue to consider them time and time again. He was incredibly generous with his thoughts and ways of questioning.

I know that I am not alone in writing this…Paul embodied a bit of magic. I am so grateful for the experiences that I had with him. We will miss the famous photographer, Paul Caponigro, but more importantly, we will miss our friend."

Paul's son, John Paul Caponigro, posted this to Instagram Threads:

"My father Paul Caponigro died of congestive heart failure Sunday, Nov 10. Of course my family and I are overwhelmed. We’re grateful for the flood of heartfelt appreciation for him and his art. We welcome your thoughts and feelings about what he meant to you in the comments. Included here are my favorite photograph of dad’s (a galaxy in an apple) and Skip Klein’s portrait of dad made the day before dad passed away."

I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to talk with him a few times. He was a great guy.

He gave a presentation at the Center for Photographic Art in February 2020. He will be missed.
