I just got a patterson 4 tank and it comes with two reels that are supposed to be able to be pulled apart and adjusted to 120mm. I've tried the instructions (turn clockwise until it' clicks and then counter clockwise. I watched a youtube and the guy seemed to do it pretty easy but I can't seem to get it. What might I be doing wrong?
Thanks!

120mm or for 120 film [which is 60mm]?

It just takes a little bit more force that you may think. It's one of those things where you feel like you could damage it if you twist harder. Once you do it once, you will find yourself clikcing it backwards and forwards with ease.

Tnx guys. Yes a tank for 120mm film. Oh it's one of those...ick

I ment regular 120 film...nothing fancy. I"m turning with all my strength but it just stops. Do I need to push or pull when turning?

No push or pull ,just turn-may be a little stiff if it's new, don't be afraid to put some force into it!

Are yours new or are they used? Maybe they are glued together with gunk.

It's brand new..it's just impossible to open. I can get it to go so far and then it stops. I can't get it to go any further. It says turn clockwise until it clicks and then counterclockwise. It's hard to see the mechanism.

Since it's new could there be manufacturing residue that is gumming up the works? Would it benefit If I gave it a soak?

When mine were new they were tricky to adjust, I think I pushed them together and then twisted before I could widen them for 120 film.

I'm using all the force I have and all I end up doing is hurting my hands

But gentle force. Don't break it.

Make sure you are twisting it clockwise. So, if the bottom ring is in your left hand, then your right hand is moving the top ring out to the right in a clockwise direction.

If you are hurting your hands you are using more than enough force. The mechanism is only tabs in slots with small ridges across each slot that the tab must ride over to come loose. I'm sure you have done this already but have you tried turning it the opposite direction from what the directions say?

got it finally!!! Kevin's description finally worked!!

How many Apuggers does it take to adjust a Patterson Reel??

:D

Good one, folks. My recollection is that the newer ones are harder to adjust. How many Apuggers? Add a few more to comment after the fact. At least we're not arguing
