Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum but been shooting film for a long time on & off - I’m in my 60’s.

Recently I decided to get a new used tripod for Toyo 45a - I got Manfrotto 058 the one with the drop down legs - it’s really for studio. Also with a geared head.

It works great at home and a very sturdy set up. However I wanted it for shortish walks from the car…

I was a bit daunted by the total weight of my kit but thought I’d give it a try recently; by walking a 7 mile round trip to a favourite derelict factory site location.

Backpack and kit about 7kg tripod and head about 8kg.

Imagine my frustration on arriving to find the factory demolished!

What are your own stories where you have had to be patient with the challenges of LF photography?

What’s worse is driving by a site almost daily saying to yourself, “ I should take a picture of that,” only to find “that” suddenly gone.

That scenario has played out many times for me, when I lived in Japan. The most upsetting time was when I decided to explore a large bamboo forest, outside one of the small towns I taught in. Once inside, I discovered an old, abandoned neighbourhood made up of a few streets and homes. It was as dark as night in there, as the bamboo was quite tall and thick. The houses were most likely constructed shortly after the war. An infinite number of photographic compositions jumped out at me. I rushed back to the train station, planning to return the following week. A week had passed, and I returned with my 4x5 camera. You can imagine my surprise when I found the entire area had been leveled to make way for a new development. My jaw hit the ground. It still bothers me to this day.
The list of challenges/failures is long, but this one is top of the list!

An ideal opportunity for a "new topogrphics" shot.

I strongly recommend that you get a carbon fiber tripod which lighter, stronger and easier to carry.
