I managed to get a paterson tank with 2 reels, and i ended up getting 2 defective reels.

Paterson customer support said it was an issue from 2021 and to send them to the retailer and ask for new ones..

Yet i managed to trace down posts from 2015 about the same problem..

is it worth a shot getting new paterson reels, or just going for the samigon ones?

If you are looking for confirmation that Paterson reels are usually reliable, I imagine many of us can offer that. I have 6 of various ages, all good.

It sounds like you have been really unlucky. What exactly is the defect?

one half, in the same spot, is a mold defect that left about 2 inches of the track on that side filled in with resin.
the minute the film hits that spot it just jumps out. I thought about gouging it out with a nail, but the effort seemed to much for me at the time. And im not happy because i ended up loosing a test roll of film.

Oh that’s bad. Did you buy it new or did some fly online seller palm you off with dud goods?

got a developing tank that comes with two reels inside it, was in the fresh factory box.

paterson didnt seem to care, and kind of thought it was funny.

You didn't answer the question. If it's new it has a warranty. If you have a sales slip bring it back to the seller and they will give you a replacement.

If you bought it from "some guy", it's been screwed with -- and that's why he's dumping it on you. Lesson learned, hopefully.

Have you tried sending them back to the retailer from which you purchased them?

Freestyle sells Paterson. I bought a tank and 3 reels from them earlier this year and they were fine.

well seeing i purchased them about back in january, and had them in a closet unopened... and have no reciept. and no one does returns without reciepts

Well, considering what you are describing as wrong with them sounds like major mold damage, the chances of getting bad ones again is actually quite low. You should be safe buying new ones, but if you don’t want to trust the brand there are other options. Sadly that doesn’t help you with the ones that you do have. For those I doubt trying to “fix” them would do any good, so probably best to dispose of them at this point.

This problem should have been caught by quality control before it was package. The company should stand behind its products and replace it for the OP. It is an obvious manufacturing error not caused by the owner.

Thats not always true, there is always a grey area and anyone in customer service has the ability to rectify this especially if you've been a "regular"

Probably Paterson would want these back. Definitely not what you would expect. I've been using Paterson products on and off since 1973, never a problem.
AP and Arista sell reels that are easier to get film started.

the paterson reels didnt seem to bad to get started once i cut the leader, but i did message the american distributor and am thinking i might get satisfaction there.

have just picked up both of your emails, one of which has left me a little confused.

Firstly, the issue with reels was a manufacturing fault which happened in summer 2021. All our dealers and distributors were made aware as we recalled all the units.

While the recall took place, some of the fault units would of already been sent out to end retailers and customers which is near impossible for us to stop. To end rectify this issue we have posted posts on social media as well as told as many of our retailers as possible that if any customers like your self find a faulty reel then they need to be replaced and we will credit the store or distributor.

That being said, please return the faulty reels to the store you bought them from, they will issue you replacements.

Call FreeStyle, one of Photrio's sponsors, and talk to them. You may be surprised to find that they can be very reasonable. They have come though for me when I had unusual situations.

I like freestyle. I LOVE arista.edu film and i have just opened my first package of arista edu paper, and lo and behold, the package has a slip inside that actually gives a contrast setting chart for beseler color heads AND instructions for the proper developing, stop bathing, and fixing of said paper.

roberts distributors is going to be sending me replacements. SO hopefully theyll be functional ones.

For some reason the small side tabs didnt seem to be an issue at all for me.

If you mean the two projections at the mouth of the spiral, they’re essential to tell you where the mouth is, which way it’s pointing, and whether you have the two halves of the spiral lined up correctly.

Do you have a card bank account breakdown page you can offer as proof or a cancelled check?

You might as well try returning in person and speaking directly with the manage, either way, you've nothing to loose by doing so.

IMO.

Just for what it's worth, I used Paterson System 4 tanks for years. They all leaked, and they all were a little fiddly to load. So on a whim I bought a Beseler 2 reel tank. It doesn't leak and the reels are much easier to load in the dark because they have an apron you can lay the film on, and it helps it go onto the reels straight and smooth.

It was also 20 dollars for a used one that works like a new one. Mine looks like this one below, I think Beseler just put their name on it? I also gave up on change bags. It was so much easier to block the light on one bathroom window and bring a small folding table in there. I use a blanket to cover any light leaks around the door.

thats the Arista/AP one freestyle sells under its own name. Its not exactly the greatest thing.
One mine the threads started leaking after 20 rolls and the little red cap was NEVER leak proof.

A wrap of tape about the lid/tank joint is always a good idea, IMO.

Good masking paper tape will work, I used it for years and it kept the developing fluid so inside a Paterson tank OK.
