I am in need of a new main cocking spring for a Synchro Compur #1 shutter. No online spring manufacturer lists a spring that will work and I do not want to pay for a "special fabrication". I do not have the tooling to make a new one myself. I do not know what the pull strength of a new one should be. I have removed 3 coils from this one with only marginal improvement in operation. The spring is 1.075 inch/27.32mm long, hook end to hook end; wire diameter is .016 inch/.4mm; the outside diameter is .095 inch/2.42mm. A #1 Compur Rapid uses a larger diameter spring that will not fit in the Synchro Compur. 3 coils are .080 inch/2mm.
The existing one barely runs the shutter on the 1 second setting for two consecutive cycles then stalls on the third release or if the speed is changed each cycle it stalls at 1/25 but works again if allowed to sit idle for a few minutes.
A full disassembly, clean, and reassembly has been done and all other parts are working correctly.

Try carol at Flutot's camera repair, all she does is leaf shutters & may have something for you.

have you tried looking for another broken shutter for sale to get parts from? how about keh for a cheap UGLY rated shutter? flea bay?

generally if the shutter is inconsistant, it needs a good cleaning, not a spring. i see you did the cleaning but perhaps try washing it out again? are you sure of the lube points? i had a pdf of the repair manual for your shutter but im sure a google search can find it.

i know how frustrating it can be. but there can be other parts worn n the spring since shortening it is just dragging it to what seems to work better.

It was an AS IS purchase from KEH. 2nd 210 Symmar in #1 Synchro Compur arrived today. It needs a CLA also. Does not appear to have been worked on like the first one needing the new cocking spring. I have a print copy of the linked manual as well as an electronic version. Still need the spring. Anyone with a lathe want to make one for me??

ok so you're way ahead of the game... good to hear.

making a spring isnt as easy as just twisting up some wire. its got to be the correct type n hardness wire im sure you are well aware. ive done springs using my drill press but they never worked like the originals.

good luck.

After a CLA on Synchro Compur #2 it works correctly. Eye against a sweep second hand shows 1 second to be approximately .9 second and 1/2 second close to .5 with all other speeds increasing over the previous proportionally.

The bad spring shutter needs 900 grams of pull to cock it.
The good spring shutter takes 1400 grams of pull to start the cocking lever moving and then drops to a steady 1200 grams of pull to full cock position.
The good spring and its measurements:

I think a Copal #1 will be a direct replacement for the Synchro Compur.
