Sodium Metabisulphite is easier to obtain if you know where to find it - it is in the supermarket home brewing section as sanitiser.
sulfates are a common additive in tropical developers or colour fixer (100ºF) not really intermutable but there should be a way to make sodium sulfite out of sodium hidroxide and sulfur or something like that.
maybe if you boil them together?!?!?!
if you boil sodium sulfite you should get sodium thiosulfate
