Parodinal question

So, I have some R09 (Agfa Adonal) downstairs in my chemical stash, but I am trying make Parodinal.

I have the Tylenol caplets, Sodium Hydroxide (100% lye), and now I need some
Sodium Sulfite. I know I can order it online through many retailers, but I am trying to buy it locally. Is there another Sodium product I can use and get locally that will perform the same for the Solution.

I have the formal recipe for Parodinal, I am just looking for alternatives.

You could substitute sodium or potassium bisulfite and increase the amount of sodium hydroide in the recipe. However these chemicals are probably more difficult to obtain. Sodium sulfite is used in the food industry. That is a possible source but you would probably be required to buy a 50# or 100# bag. I'm afraid that your only practical source is a chemical supplier such as www.thechemistrystore.com.

Sodium Metabisulphite is easier to obtain if you know where to find it - it is in the supermarket home brewing section as sanitiser.

Sodium Sulphite is also in the pool section or pool shop if they have it.

Regretfully, supermarkets in the US don't have a brewing section. There were a few specialty stores that stocked brewing supplies but I haven't seen any in years.

I bought some at our local fishing/hunting store of all places. Fishermen use sulfite and metabisulfite to cure salmon eggs.

Thank you for all the ideas and sources. I found the Sodium Hydroxide (100% granular LYE=drain cleaner) at the local Ace Hardware store. Walgreens was out of Tylenol, so will try the food market tonight.

I sure do wish US Supermarkets had a brewing section ! We do have a Brewing store in Racine Wisconsin called D.P. Wigley. I know they have Sodium Metabisulfite. Will METABISULFITE work ?

Problem is, I'm not a chemist by trade, so I would just be guessing.

The reason I asked this question was for a friend. He's a photographer in China. He tried bringing back a couple bottles of Rodinal in his carry on or checked bag from the USA and they found it, and disposed of it. He's using d-76 but misses Rodinal, so I sent him the Parodinal formula that was listed here and elsewhere on the Net. I have a full bottle of Agfa 09 downstairs, but wanted to see if my potion would work. I have been doing allot of 1:100 stand development and was looking to have some fun with a new developer and at the same time helping out a friend.

So far I have had a hard time locating Sodium Sulfite locally. I have seen it at Photographers Formulary, but I was trying to find it locally, to "hone" my scavenging skills.

I was poking around in the garage this morning and found some pool chemicals that i had used last year.

It's a PH Minus powder..

93.3% Sodium Bisulfate
6.7% Sodium Sulfate

I'm not sure the difference between Sulfites or BiSulfates or

Sodium bisulfate NaHSO4 is different from sodium bisulfite NaHSO3 and sodium sulfate Na2SO4 is different from sodium sulfite Na2SO3.

sulfates are a common additive in tropical developers or colour fixer (100ºF) not really intermutable but there should be a way to make sodium sulfite out of sodium hidroxide and sulfur or something like that.

if you boil sodium sulfite you should get sodium thiosulfate

If you mix solid sodium hydroxide and sulfur together you will get a mixture of various sulfur compounds. One of the chemicals produced is sodium sulfide.

If you added sulfur to sodium sulfite you should get sodium thiosulfate. This is one of the reactions that occurs in aging fixer. However, the reaction requires very fine particles of sulfur, colloidal sulfur to be more specific.

I think that chemical synthesis is better left to a manufacurer.

Just curious, is there a reason you wish to buy locally? The Chemistry Store sells it for $5.64 plus shipping for 3 lbs.

I'm trying to buy locally for 2 reasons. #1. I want it now. today...not 4 days from now.

#2. I was trying to buy locally to see if I can use an over-the-counter version, just like my friend in China will do.
Maybe he has a chemical store in his neighborhood, and maybe he is lucky, but he can not get imports of Rodinal into China,
so I was trying to replicate "sort of" what he would have to do. You know the MacGiver technique.

In fact Walgreens and the Food Market didn't even stock Tylenol, well except for Tylenol PM. They had their own knockoff. I was actually looking for the Capsules, so I could just pull them apart and not have to crush the pills. But apparently the generic Acetaminophen is either in Gel Caps, 1 piece capsules, or pills. I might just have to grind them. It's sort of an oxymoron. All shortcuts are more work..

I really liked that show but many of the things he did had a very tenuous relation to engineering, physics, or chemistry.

At the pool shop metabisulphite is chem clear or similar description.
