Last night I opened a very old pack of Ilford Multigrade paper (from the late 70s to early 80s). I was surprised by two things. First it printed fine with no noticeable fog, and contrast that was the same as newer MG-IV. Second the paper base was a lovely cream color with none of the optical brighteners of the modern paper. It was much closer in appearance to Ilford WarmTone before the base changed.
In reading up I found we can apparently wash the brighteners out of the newer WarmTone paper, so I will need to try this. I assume the base won't the revert to cream colored, just not as blue-white?
Are there any papers on the market that still have a cream colored base? The threads I have read from a few years ago indicate there were a few, but the paper supplier stopped making that line (at least for Ilford).
