I print via ink-jet (epson 1400) with Eboni6 carbon ink set. I am pleased and am happy to hand off my colour printing to commercial printing houses.

As I am set to replenish paper supplies, it has dawned on me that I am paying for colour calibrated papers when I am only printing carbon. This seems like a waste.

Any suggestions for possible alternatives?

What is a color calibrated paper? What paper are you currently using?
I also print B&W with an Eboni-based inkset (but not carbon6). I like bright white rag papers without OBAs. Here are some (assuming all matte papers as you are using Eboni):

- PremierArt Fine Art Hot Press 270
- Moab Entrada Natural 190
- Museo Portfolio Rag

Harman FB works well, but I generally like a bit more surface texture. I used to use a lot of Arches Infinity, but the line got acquired and modified so that's gone.

Like I said in a previous post, I print palladium, carbon transfer using homemade tissue, and inkjet for digital negatives and prints. I shoot both film and digital originals. I am pretty much all over the map -- I may not be alone in this regard. I haven't made any specific claims about any of these processes, so no case required. We all make choices for practical and aesthetic reasons. If you have any specific questions about the choices I have made I'd be happy to share my rationale. I am not shy about stating my preferences:rolleyes:

Now I am just yanking your chain. But even though you are all over the map like most of us , there must be a certain process that really moves you and is your favorite. Sounds like the makings of a new thread with decent observations with no flaming would be interesting for others to express viewpoints on their perfect process.

I am using the standard Epson stuff, premium glossy/matte etc... But $50 for 20 sheets of 13x19 is getting a bit much. It's understandable when Epson is trying to match their colour ink sets to it. But when you print carbon, there is not much point.

It may be better if I just bought out-dated silver print and fixed it.

All vendors provide profiles for their papers. I don't think Epson papers are any better matched to their inks than other quality papers. They do have the benefit of using their media types and bundling their profiles in their printer drivers. I don't see any benefit to using an Epson paper unless you really like it, and this is especially true when using a monochrome inkset that you have to profile yourself. Eboni is not compatible with luster or glossy papers, and if you are looking for rag papers with no OBAs, Epson has few offerings.

Fixed photo paper is likely to yield poor results for pigment inkjet printing as it lacks a receptive coating. There are now a lot of baryta inkjet papers but these can get pretty expensive.

Visit the Red River website. They have some quality papers at affordable prices.
