Pretty hard to beat a F surface (Kodak nomenclature) glossy, air dried fiber base print. If I'm going to display I'll dry mount one and make a couple extras for the flat files.
It was the images in the old Darkroom Guide that made me envious. The quality was beyond anything I have seen since. Subject matter was kitsch, but that wasn't the point.
I was a ferrotyped glossy fan, so the surface texture did not interest me. Still doesn't. But now I am an unferrotyped glossy fan - modern papers don't ferrotype for love or money (not that I have a lot of either to my name).
It depends on the paper type and subject. For RC papers, I like Pearl surface and gloss for FB.
For a female portrait, I might choose a semi-matt surface.
Those who like to add coloring might choose a Matt surface.
