Paper sizes: Ilford 14x18 etcetera

Man it would be great to find paper in sizes other than 8x10/11x14/16x20..

I like some of the offerings in 12x16, but only for lith.

I would love to see Ilford MGIV and WT in a 14x18 or 13x17..something in between 11x14 and 16x20.

What's the possibility of this Mr. Galley?

Since I standardized on Ilford for silver, it would be nice and perhaps fill that price slot between the existing sizes...I waste a lot of a 16x20 and barely have room on 11x14 for about half my images..

Chime in Apugr's if you'd like to see it.

Maybe not feasible for Ilford..but then again, maybe it is..

30x40cm is a "standard", I believe - it comes to 12x16".

It's one of the old half-forgotten metric sizes that have disappeared as cameras, but still exist as paper (and of course I have a camera that size...).

The ilford website lists available sizes for MGIV RC as

I don't think there is any need for any more sizes, IMHO

With the seemingly inexorable rise in the amateur market of some popular LF cameras, especially 4x5" and 8x10" it would be great to have real straight enlargement available of these sizes.

Already there is 8x10" paper, 12x15" which is close enough to 12x16", 16x20" works perfectly and I don't know why there has never been (to my knowledge) a 24x30" paper from Ilford.

The 10x10" has always been well received for square format negs, although I don't know of many after market square frames readily available any more.

I expect the size of the market would have to be far greater than it already is, to warrant anything like this happening.

As I understand it, the importers usually have to order a minimum order of one carton (or box) of any single paper size. With some of the really unusual sizes this would really limit the prospects of any importer laying out cold hard cash for sensitive material just to find half of it will sit on a shelf.

Within reason we are quite well off with the multiple of paper sizes.

One of the best sizes Ilford makes is an A4 sized paper, this has almost perfect proportions for enlarging 35mm negs. It's smallish, compared to 11x14" and 12x16" larger than 8x10" where it counts, yet still can be placed in the myriad of folders available around the world and carried about under one's arm.

12X16 is my favorite size for enlarging from 4X5. Currently have some Kentmere Kentona, Bromide & soon to be exhausted Fortezo. Maybe Ilford will talk to their US dealer, Freestyle, to expand the offerings. Or need to order from Europe (dollar is hurting us).

I hope that Ilford can talk Freestyle into carrying their 12x16 papers. 11x14 to 16x20 is a big jump--not so much in actual inches as in appearance.

Maybe we could get a co-op tp purchase through Wynit or whomever..
Sucks that they apparently have it but it doesn't make it our way..

There does seem to be great variety of sizes and I would have thought little chance of changes, given the economics of cutting, boxing etc or sheer inertia.

However on pure economics grounds I have never understood why there hasn't been a change from 5x7 to 5 x 7.5. The vast majority of mini-labs must produce their vast majority of their prints as 5x7, forcing a crop of the 35mm neg which accounts for the vast majority of negs.

OR does the vast majority of mini-labs produce 4x6 prints which does conform to the 35mm neg and do they do this because it doesn't involve any decision on the part of the lab which might result in a comeback from the customer who asks why there are bits missing?

Having once done 4x6s I think the 5x7 offers appreciably bigger prints which customers would pay for, especially if it was 5 x 7.5 and could accommodate full negs.

Of course there is the problem of what does Ilford Fuji and Kodak etc do with the remaining 5x7 boxes. Would the market collapse overnight, rendering 5x7s worthless? I doubt it but if it did, this indicates the great desire for 5x7.5

I am surprised that a small run of 5x7.5 hasn't been tried. If it fails to attract sufficient demand then it gets dropped as Cooltone developer was and Kodak HIE is.

New products always carry a risk but without some risk there is no progress and possibly no chance of greater profitability.

Of course if the print paper market is static or shrinking then as long as all print paper manufacturers agree a form of cartel and do not launch a new size then no one loses market share from the other.

I might be wrong but I suspect that the investment in a new size of paper at 5x7.5 against the risk involved must be small compared to the risk of Kodak launching a new Tmax400.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if 8.5" x 11" turns out to be the next newly popular size. A lot of the digital print paper is that size, so I'm starting to see more and more frames in that size. As frames (and albums) go, are paper sizes not likely to follow?

I know Rob Skeoch (Big Camera Workshops) gets his Ilford through Wynit. Maybe he could help persuade them to bring in the additional sizes that up until now have been more popular in the UK or Europe in general.

Also 12x15 MG FB.

10x10 would be very cool.
I suppose rolls might be a solution, how about 56 inches x 98 feet of MG IV FB glossy? It's in stock.

In all honesty the current range of sizes we really believe to be a very good range ( having due regard for our customer requirements ) historically when demand was significantly higher we could not justify other sizes than the ones we now have.

As an FYI an economical box run ( buying the boxes only, not filling them )
is 20,000 so as always its not as easy it looks.

All products in our PAL ( product availability list ) are available to all distributors, in turn resellers can order, but obviously we have minimum orders, so if you see a product size you want speak to your reseller :

10 x 10 is a size that is used in aerial survey work.

Finally as a reminder the HARMAN technology Distributor in the USA is Wynit and the KENTMERE distributor is Freestyle.

wow I never new they made 10x10 paper. Ive had abit of a Google but nothing seems to come up, does anyone know if its still possible to pick any up in the UK? BH have some for $100 or so plus shipping ect would be expensive. Paul.

Paul Green - I'd suggest talking to your usual supplier of paper first then maybe looking at Ilford Photo's D2D (Direct to Dealer) system, I think the square paper is listed under that... yeah it's listed as 25.4cmx25.4cm If you look on Ilford Photo's website you can find your nearest D2D dealer and order through them. (edited to add it looks like 10x10" only comes in multigrade RC glossy?)

Did anyone notice we've had a 20" roll produced, the idea being a roll small enough to get in the average darkroom that can be used for a wide range of custom sizes.

A rotary trimmer? What does that have to do with anything?

I will contact Wynit and see what it takes to get the 12x16 here in the US.

I notice that Kentmere Select VC is also made in 10x10 but have not been able to track down a UK supplier for this size. Any ideas Mr Galley - please?

why should the manufacturers make all kinds of weird sizes? that would only drive up the price of manufacture,

Yeah, a 4 inch strip is really useful..

Ilford has 12x16..just isn't imported here and I want it. Case closed.
And I don't want a roll.

Now, anyone else want to see it in 12x16 here in the US of A?
