I agree about the ease of taking the paper put of its original box. I've toyed with the idea of a paper safe, but I've never really needed one.

I only use the paper safe because it was very inexpensive and part of buying other darkroom equipment.

A paper safe can be as simple as two nested cardboard boxes or as elaborate as you wish. If you decide on making one the difficult part is designing an efficient light trap. I would recommend just buying one. Decide just how many papers sizes you use routinely and then pick a size. Infrequently used papers can be left in the original boxes until needed. I typically print one paper in 8X10 and 5X7 sizes so I have a single box big enough to fit both.

I built one as a drawer under my counter right beside the enlarger. It has a sliding lid to make it light tight. The lid is pushed closed when the drawer is closed. Works great.

I am probably going to do this in my setup. I won't store paper in it, just use it per session. I'll have to design it to hold my max cut sheet size which is 20x24. Should not be too hard, the enlarger wall is 12.5" feet.
