I did. The effects he gets aren't due to the lens(es) he uses.
Think: Taking: composition, lighting, emulsion, exposure, processing, post-processing manipulation; printing: cropping, emulsion, exposure, processing, post-processing manipulation. All of these are usually much more important than the lens used.
However, if the first comment is accurate to focal length, it's probably not accurate for aperture. 14" Dagors were nearly all f7.7, if not all. Coating is relatively less important in a studio where you have more control over contrast with lighting. There were no Golden or Gold Dot Dagors over 12" AFAIK, so if it is a 14" lens it isn't one of these.
But Dan's correct, at least DOF for given composition on a given format somewhat notwithstanding. Trying to reproduce a creative someone's "look" by using the same equipment just doesn't work. You'd be better off using what you have until you understand how it's done. The camera and lens aren't what's doing it.
