Pan F in Pyrocat HD

Wondering if anyone is using this combination. I develop FP4+ in Pyrocat 1:1:100 for twelve minutes, any idea of times EI's etc for Pan F+?
 
I haven't used Pyrocat yet, but it sounds great, and I love Pan F (I use FX39), so I'd be interested to hear how it goes. (and also by the way, where do you get your Pyrocat?). Thanks.
 
The MDC shows Pan F+ in PMK 1+2+100 for 7.5m at 20c agitate first 10sec and 10s/min. Since Pyrocat HD and PMK are similar, this might be a good place to start. I've been using D-76 up til now with excellent results, I'm ordering more PanF to try with my Pyrocat(just got some)so far I've only processed Agfa APX 400 with it, WOW!! I'm just finishing a roll of FP4+ (120) that will get souped in Pyrocat HD.

I would start with the following: 11:30 minutes 1+1+100 70F/21C using an agitation scheme of 4 inversions for 10 seconds every minute. Shoot a test roll with images exposed @ E.I. 80, 100 and 125. I would expect a speed rating of ISO 100 being spot on...

Oops! It's PanF, sorry I've misread it as FP4. (Got confused by Rick's message mentioning it.) Please disregard my post above... Sorry again.
 
I have done it recently, as a test (but just once), 1:1:100 15 min @ 20°C agitated cont. for the first 30 sec, then once each 55 sec for 5 sec.
Not bad at all, almost grainless pictures, nice contrast, very good detail in the shadows too. But I have the impression that I hardly got the box-speed out of it. But this might be due to the fact that I had to coop with very long exposure times, around 60 to 120 sec, because I pertinently wanted to shoot in low ambient light.
I will have to test it again, I am preparing a new series in low light situations and, by this, long exposures.
I think (hope) that slow film can stand these situations better than fast film, because it is intended for slow work.

Some days trying to be helpful just does not work out. I am attaching a photo of the real Sandy King.

I have very limited experience with Pan F. However, I think 10-12 minutes at 70F in a tank with intermittent agitation, using the 1:1:100 dilution, should give good negatives.

Sandy, everytime I see that photo I get envious; it's a really great portrait from a great photog... (It's by Mike Robinson right?) I wish I had such a great portrait of myself.

Thank you, I'm going to try that with my next roll of Pan F. I was going to start with the PMK stats, but this will probably work better, Its almost the same as FP 4.

Yes, it is a daguerreotype by Mike Robinson of Toronto. It was made in May of 2006 during the first (and only) APUG conference. The style is very period as he used one of those Petzval lenses wide open and if you look carefully at the portrait you will see that the only thing in focus is one of my eyes.

Hard to believe that was almost four years ago. At the time I had just retired from Clemson University, having finished my last class just a few days earlier.

Thanks everyone. I will do some tests this weekend and let you know the results. I use an EI of 80 with FP4, so will try an EI of 32 with Pan F. BTW, great beard Sandy, glad you haven't crossed over!
Pan F has always been a favourite with me, just like the look of it, and I usually develop in Rodinal 1:50. Thought I would try Pyrocat as it looks so good on FP4+.
Oh, and Kevin, I mix my own....see Sandy's page for the formula. The raw chemicals came from Vanbar in Melbourne.

Try Vanbar, but the last time I enquired about a not very exotic chemical I was told that they are not stocking very much and I interpreted that as not restocking out of stock chems.

There are various places to buy general chemicals, and I have bought metol and pyrocatechol from Merck in Melbourne. I had to order over the phone and it arrived fresh from Germany shortly afterwards.

Hello,

Which developer would be the best for contrast reducing of PanF+ ?
I would like to use this film for landscape but in bright sunlight scenes only (was considering Adox 100 which image/look I like very much but its soft emulsion makes a few serious troubles in developing process that forces me to look for another /similar/ film).

But PanF+ is quite contrasty... what is the best way to reduce it?
I like D-76, do you thing that much diluted D-76 will cope with PanF+ giving good results (old style look)?

Tried some Pan F in Pyrocat. I rated it at 32, and processed the film at 1:1:100 for 12 minutes @ 21 deg. C. Negs look great, maybe a tad dense, so I may try the next roll at 20 deg.
Anyway, this looks to be a good combination, so will give it a go with 120.
 
Sorry Renes, just saw your post. I used to develop Pan F in Rodinal 1:50, this knocks the contrast down considerably, you could even try 1:100 for less. I actually wanted a little more zap, that's why I am trying Pyrocat, and it seems to be good in this department.
I have never tried D-76, but would imagine that 1:3 would control the contrast for you. Pan F is very consistent and still does have some of that "old" style look, which is why I have stuck with it.
 
Renes: Yes, D-76 1+3 works very well at helping to control the contrast of PanF+. My starting point for development is using the Ilford recommendation for ID-11. Reduce or extend as necessary. Works pretty well.
 
This is a great combination. My usual is 2:2:100 for 8' @ 20c. I've shot Pan-F for years, since way before the "+" came along, love it obviously. Rodinal was always my choice, 1:100. That does look great but I've found that Pyrocat gives better separation in the lower values while keeping the highlights in control just as well as I was able to do with the rodinal.
