Hi

I recently bought a nice Toyo branded hard case for large format camera, and some of the foam has deteriorated into almost dust. Thus I'm looking for some replacement.

What type of foam should I look for? Should I search for "closed cell packing foam"?

Where to buy? Amazon do have them, but it would be nice to see the material types and texture in a local store.
- Hardware store? I don't remember seeing them in Home Depot.
- Music store? Like guitar center?
- Luggage store?

Thanks!

I have a number of cases that I need to reline. One thought is using flight case egg box foam, maybe some ply wood dividers covered in the same foam, but then it would be easier to buy case dividers which give greater flexibility.

There are companies specialising in cases and insert, while not cheap they seem to be good for ideas. The link is to a UK company, but there will be similar in the US.

I bought exercise mats ( they have interlocking edges-similar to anti fatigue mats for a workshop) closed cell foam from target, $20 enough for several cases

I’ve used Kaizen foam, It’s a layered closed cell foam. I would recommend avoiding the solid black, because the dye may rub off, however. It’s pretty easy to work with, you trace an outline of the object, then cut through however many layers you need to get to the desired depth.

Where you find the foam depends on the dimensions of the foam you need. Foam gets very expensive very quickly as the thickness increases.

If you want to handle the foam to help make a decision you’re in a good area to look.

Should be plenty of upholstery supply or fabric warehouses to ask.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm learning new things about different material as well. In the end I ordered Polyethylene 1.5" thick foam that is big enough for the case (only need to replace inside the top cover). We will see how it goes.
