Thread Purpose: Exchange information about chemicals and coatings that we have used to refurbish Packard Shutters.

Problem Statement: Used Packard Shutters rust and require refurbishment to restore them to their intended functionality.

Requested Information: Positive and negative experiences with various products you have used to restore Packard Shutters, or similar metal surfaces. Such products would include: rust inhibitors, rust protective treatments, waxes, paints and coatings, etc.

Here is my generalized Packard Shutter restoration process and the products that I use, which is largely based on Jim Galli's "How I clean up a packard" description:

1) Disassemble the Packard Shutter.

2) Remove rust with a steel brush, sandpaper, and/or steel wool.

3) Treat metal surfaces with Ospho (http://www.ospho.com) and allow to dry.

4) Clean surfaces.

5) Paint the outer surface of the shutter housing with black Rust-Oleum Flat Protective Enamel (http://www.rustoleum.com).

6) Treat the inside surfaces of the metal shutter housing with LPS 3 (http://www.lpslabs.com).

7) Clean the metal parts attached to the shutter blades and piston with small steel wire brush and steel wool as needed.

8) Clean the shutter blades with a damp cloth.

9) Reassemble and test.

Hi Jay. You've probably already read my page about them.

I wash them in the sink in detergent. Scour the rust out with steel wool. Dry thoroughly, and buff the inside with a bit of paste wax, and reassemble. No magic but one last ingredient for your list; elbow grease.
