Packard Shutter Boxes now Finished

First of all a big thanks to Bob Fowler whos plans (http://mysite.verizon.net/fowler/photo/packard2.htm) I used and another to Jim Galli for finding the small shutter that perfectly fits my smaller barrel lens and for pointing me in the direction of the 12" magic lantern lens. The shutter for the big lens came from the nice people at the Packard Shutter company (http://www.packardshutter.com/).

A brief note on the 6"x8" lens: It is branded as "Peck Rapid Rectilinear 6" x 8". For those who didn't know before, Peck is my last name and I couldn't be happier at having this lens. I have no idea who really made it or anything other than I got if from J Stafford who used to be a member here. All he charged me was the cost of postage.

I was probably 90% true to Bob's plans and because I have all those woodworking tools to justify I had some fun with the joinery and used a mahogany veneer over everything.

The camera is a 5x7 Century No. 2

I've got a fresh box of Efke 25 and a bunch of time since being laid-off. Can't wait to start testing!

Very nice workmanship. When I made my packard box I made it so I could use all my lenses with just the one shutter. It's like a lot of the ones we've seen. I just made the pin short enough to let the lensboards lay in flat. That way I didn't have to put a pin in each board. I didn't make mine as purdy as yours though.

Very nice! I just finished putting together a box for Brendan Sforcina (though he is going to do the final finishing). I made some changes to the posted plans - Brendan's is a bit larger (7 1/2" square) and accepts 6" square lensboards. The 2 metal thingies on the bottom are a homegrown swivel air connector (he's using a #8 Packard).

Hey Alan,

looks really nice. I have an 8x10 Century #1 with an additional 5x7 back, a large packard (I can't remember which one, but it is big). I keep thinking that this would be a cool thing to do. However, I tend to be limited by 3 things:
1) I am lame (you would fall off your chair laughing at my lensboards!)
2) no time
3) the front standard seems a bit flimsy.

It doesn't help that the lensboards are only 4 3/4" square.

I also grabbed some laser mounts that were being tossed. I thought these might make a poor-man's universal mount (together with some sort of a bag with a drawstring to provide a light-trap.

All this is a long-winded way of saying--my hat's off to you. You do good work (I have some of your lensboards).

Packard Mount

good job: I got a lens and packard from Jgalli a while back, and have done all the work to mount just about
any lens I have on it. I took toyo boards and had them
machined so they screw directly to an oak block which
houses the packard. It is not finished yet, but the pieces are all made, just waiting for time to screw it
together.
I put threaded inserts into the oak block, and then have
machine screws that go thru the Toyo board into that, and the whole thing fits directly on either my 8x10 toyo
or the 8x10 Canham should I get energetic enough to take the whole thing out in the field, as I have portrait uses in mind.

But they're so tiny!!! I'd be a waste of time to use that with my monster 350 Componon(that's why I have my huge packard, as well as one that fits(barely) into my 4x5 with a 4x4 lensboard)

The problem I see is getting the shutter back far enough to clear the rear element. I would take a lensboard and build a short riser on front of it to mount the shutter in. That way you could have a place to have the hose come out. Then epoxy a front standard frame to that, to mount lensboards to.

I'm really glad everyone posted thier solutions. Now I have a bunch of new ideas for when I build another. This is definitly an advantage with APUG. I would never have seen any of this otherwise.
