Pacific Northwest SUbforum???

If you'll pardon a slight digression, I just moved to Seattle from Los Angeles. Are there any good darkroom supply stores in the area?

(I couldn't find a forum that seemed more appropriate for this question, so I endorse the idea of a regional forum for some part of the Pacific Northwest... .)
 

Glazer's at 9th and Republican in Seattle.
Optechs at Republican and Fairview.

Glazer's is one of the largest and most complete stores you will find anywhere.

When I walked into the main Glazer's storefront, they didn't seem to have anything that couldn't be used for digital photography. Do they hide the chemicals, or are they in a different storefront?

I suppose I probably should have asked them when I was there, but I've developed a strange aversion to speaking with salespeople...
 
The film and chemicals are across the street from the main store. That may change after Ivey closes.
 
Digital was in a separate store the last time I was there. The film store is all film with a walk in freezer and lots of supplies. As good as any I have seen in California for a walk in store. I order nearly all of my supplies from Freestyle though, I have for decades and they have never, never gotten an order wrong or incomplete. I've been to their store in California also. Great people to do business with.
 
Glazer's in Seattle

The lighting, chemistry, darkroom equipment and supplies and film store across the street (the "film store") is wonderful.

They do, however have some film stuff in the other, larger store (the "digital store") - Leica, some large and medium format lenses and cameras, and a great (and well hidden) selection of filters. A lot of the film related equipment in that store is used, and includes a variety of used 35mm equipment.

They also have an excellent selection of tripods, including many that are for large format.

Thats also where they have their camera bags.

If you are looking for a hand meter, they have them in both stores (although not many). If you are looking for a Gossen Digiflash, they have it on both stores, but the price tag in the digital stuff is lower. Sadly, I bought mine at from the film store.

I think they operate most (if not all) of their rental business from the film store.

By the way, it is truly an experience buying film or colour paper there. Think of the dairy section in a large grocery store. A long wall of glass door refrigerators. Selection! They were, however, still in the process of recompiling their printed out price list for film when I was last there.

Also by the way, they stock some colour chemistry, and Formulary products.

Having just seen Rainier in Seattle (a great store) go out of business from losing their customers to online sources, I prefer to deal locally when I can. I think we need to support our local outlets, otherwise, they'll be gone.
 

Hi All PNW'ers,

I was out and about through all of Newport, OR, yesterday checking on accommodation options for the Dry Plate weekend. ( (there was a url link here which no longer exists) ) Newport looks good. I checked from the low to high ends of 'nice, but not Ritz'. Everyone had plenty of rooms for the second weekend in August. In all but one, I could have gotten a room on the spot.

If you are interested in visiting Newport (for any reason) pm me and I'll send you some links of places to stay.

If we do manage to organize a PNW subforum, I'm open to sharing my darkroom for events on the Central Oregon Coast. It's not very big, but I have a 5x7 enlarger and a UV printer.

The question posed to the motels was -- do you have on the order of 10-20 rooms available, not just a single room.

Why don't you go ahead and plan something? Having a place also means we don't need a meeting room at the hotel. This eases the logistics a lot (its hard to share prints, and have discussions, in the open air...)

I was there not long ago, took the RV to Beverly and had a great time as usual, Spencer creek was excellent. For those who don't know Newport has two lighthouses and some great coast line. RV parking at the Walmart is free and the hotel next to it is walking distance to Agate beach. About every restaurant is there and the Oregon Aquarium is second to none, as are the historic bridges.

Now, if we have a possible date and a possible place to meet at. Who's interested?
 
I would love to organize something here in Newport. Don is right about accommodations, of course. I wasn't thinking in terms of one place for a big group. Is that necessary? If people could choose their own comfort zone it might make it easier on everyone. We could rent the meeting room at the Yaquina Visual Arts Center for the group. The VAC also has a darkroom, but like most of its kin, it is currently a storage room. This would give me a good excuse to nag them about letting me clean it up a bit.

I'm afraid I'm thinking of this kind of event as a learning/education opportunity as much as a social event. Increasingly, people are starting photography with digital tools and mind-sets. They aren't getting darkroom in school or the local camera club or art center. APUG has a great opportunity to offer 'analog wannabes' a chance to touch the magic of the traditional craft.

If the folks who are interested in meeting sometime in Newport could talk about what they'd like to see happen, I'll get on it right after August 16 (I'm booked to the rafters until then.)

To All Pacific Northwest APUGers:

Denise, Robert and Don are putting together a APUG meet down at the Oregon Coast. We are still finalizing the event, but the preliminary information follows to help you make your own appropriate lodging reservations. We'll be providing additional detailed information shortly for the event itself.

When: Saturday-Sunday September 13-14
Where: Newport, Oregon
Who: All Analog photographic process users (APUG) - including those interested in alt process, small format, MF, LF, ULF. Digital users interested in these areas are encouraged to attend, but the content isn't directly digital (so not photoshop, digital equipment, etc. ). No intent to exclude anyone, just that the content is APUG-centric.

We'll publish more about the events and timeline, but expect to have a few invited presentations, sharing of (your!) images (e.g. bring some), sharing from each of the attendees, and the possibility of one or more group field trips. We'll figure out some restaurant for a joint dinner sometime(dutch).
Costs will be minimal - cover the expenses including a meeting room rental.

You're on your own for overnight logisitics....
There are quite a number of motels/hotels in Newport that have at least a few rooms each available. We'll tell you more about possible camping and RV opportunities.

Plan on making some images while down on the coast.

We encourage those of you from farther away - B.C., Seattle/Spokane, Idaho and Northern California to consider attending. And to setup similar local activities.

Anyone interested in having a Seattle/Tacoma gathering needs to speak-up and suggest a time and place. Weekend is generally best for me( I, like most, work monday-friday). I will travel to Seattle or Tacoma (oh horrors ).
