PA/NY Gathering?

What about a PA/NY Gathering here in NC PA. How far would you be willing to drive for something like this? We have plenty of lodges/campgrounds/motels here in NC PA. A great place to visit in the spring! Especially if you like to fly fish also! I'd be willing to help organize this if we have enough interest. What do you think?????

I would be interested if it's not TOO far from Buffalo and if my schedule allows. I would drive a couple of hundred miles for a weekend.

How about Chautauqua NY. Interesting place and lots of places to visit. About equidistant from Erie, Rochester, and Northern PA.

Where I was thinking about is about 4.5-5hrs from SE PA(Philadelphia) or SW PA(Pittsburgh). It's about 3 hrs from Buffalo- Rochester- Syracuse, NY. About 3hrs from Harrisburg, PA. Here's a couple of links to the area & a lodge that has indivisual cabins or a main lodge. Also, I was thinking about doing this when it's warmer! Maybe when the Mountain laurel is in bloom! It can be unreal at times! This is around mid to late June.

If it's 3 hours from Harrisburg, then it's more like 6 hours from Pittsburgh, unless there's a shortcut that doesn't use the pike. I'll check the maps, but I might be interested. Don't go by me for dates, but I know I'm already booked for most of June.

edit - checked the maps and it looks like about 5 hours from where I am (out in the country, btw, not quite next to a highway).

Full service cottage at Oquaga Creek State Park

A few years ago we stayed in a very large cottage at Oquaga Creek State Park,
off Route 17 near Deposit NY. As rentals go, this is one deluxe accomodation!

This modern A-frame sleeps 8, is insulated, has electric heat, hot and cold water,
1.5 baths and a fully-equipped kitchen. You need bring only bedding and towels.

The only cottage there, it's quite secluded, set apart from all other campsites.
Located in a pretty part of New York State, we found lots to do and see nearby.

The current rate is $150/night, $650/week; IIRC weekly only in peak season.

Letchworth state park in central NY near the PA border is studded with cabins for rent, has a four star hotel and restaurant and has some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. See the pictures in my gallery taken there in our visits over the years.

The gorge there is nearly a mile across and up to 500 or more feet deep.

Looks like there might be some interest! The reason I thought the area(NC PA) would be good is that it is central to most of NY & PA. Heck we are only 3hrs from Buffalo & less then 5 hrs form Toronto! The area I'm sugesting is mostly mountains. Not many old farm buildings. Lots of old hunting camps & beautiful scenery. There are a few old towns scattered throughout the area. One is Wellsboro, PA. http://www.wellsboropa.com Also, there is the PA Grand Canyon which Pine Creek runs through.

Now this area is about 45 minutes from the Kettle Creek area I suggested in my 1st post. The Wellsboro area is also loaded with Cabins, B&B's, Motels, & campgrounds.

After thinking about it I think the Wellsboro area is a better choice because there are more options for lodging & food.

So, how do we pick an area to try to hold this event?

Oh, I agree that Letchworth state park is beautiful & would be a great place to hold it. Also over near Watkins Glen area would be another great location. Either of these 2 areas would have more old farms to photograph.

Sugesstion please????

Brad,

Since you've volunteered to organize, my suggestion is that you choose an area you're familiar with, so you can direct or escort people to nice photographic locations. I know I would appreciate that. I hope this works out, I'm looking forward to getting out in warmer weather, and seeing some new places.

Centering on Wellsboro certainly sounds like a good choice. I suppose one question might be whether the intent would be to travel around as a group, or scatter from a central spot. It's been a few years since I last stumbled around that area, but I would think there are lots of possibilities. I recollect there is a lumbering museum of some sort at Galeton, with old saw mill equipment and the like. The town of Wellsboro itself has some neat old late 1800s architecture. The area was heavily logged in the late 1800s and early 1900s but is now well re-forested and encompasses large expanses of rugged mountains. The lumbering operations are so long gone there is likely little left -- maybe an occasional foundation. The area was always sparsely populated and is probably not as good for old farmhouses and the like as other parts of the state, but I'd expect to find a few.

I would hardly represent the attached image as one of my finest shots, but here's a negative scan of a late afternoon 4x5 shot, circa 1966, looking down into Penn's Canyon from the west rim at Colton Point State Park. There is now officially a trail along that rail right-of-way, not sure whether trains still run there or not. It gives some idea of what the terrain is like.

I'm glad to hear of something like this happening near central New York as I'm about to move there (syracuse), and would like to be part of it. A wonderful place to shoot not too far from Letchworth is Chimney Bluffs, one of my favorite photo places.
It's a wonderful cliff formation on Lake Ontario.It would be great if it didn't happen too close to Bill Schwab's gathering in late June, as I'm planning on heading there this year. It's a great area to photograph, and I'm looking forward to exploring it more once I move.

Chimney Bluffs is indeed beautiful and has some lovely camp grounds nearby. It is further away from Letchworth than you think though. It is as far north in NY state as you can get at that point, and Letchworth is about as far south as you can get at that point. There is also a considerable diagonal distance between them.

Having done both, I suggest that Letchworth is the more scenic and valuable of the two photographically, and the easier to reach from PA.

When I went to school in rochester (rit 78-83) I went to both, and liked chimney bluffs best but haven't looked at a map relating the two. I just discovered Scotts bluff is like a little chimney bluffs. I think Letchworth is a good base to work from and maybe if anyone wants a longish trip to visit Chimney bluffs we can head out that way. I'm looking forward myself to finally do some cirkut shots there.
