Hello,

I saw some 8x10 film holders at the San Jose Photo Fair--wood, great shape, not too expensive. It was right up at closing time so I bought them without checking them out too closely.

Well, they are too big to fit in my camera. They are about 1/4" too wide, and, while the length is close, they way the ridge that registers the holder in the back is much closer to the top.

Any idea what these are for? They are marked "Folmer Graflex corp" on one side, and "8x10 Sterling Film patent June 7 1927" on the other.

Do they have grooves on the sides? I've never seen one, but there were 8x10" Graflex SLRs, and maybe they took Graflex-style holders like some of the other Graflex reflex cameras. In other formats these holders are wider than normal holders, have grooves on the side, and instead of a lock rib on the holder there is a groove on the face of the holder and a lock rib on the camera back.

If anyone out there has the camera, they'll probably pay a fair amount for the filmholders, and if you can't find any takers, try selling them to Lens and Repro, but they won't pay as much.

Thanks for the comments David. Good thought, but the holders don't have the side-grooves like a graflex holder.

Here are some images of the holders.

At first glance, they don't look very different. The all-wood holder is the one in question. The black on (on the right) is a standard 8x10 holder.

A closer look (right image) shows one of the differences.

The differences are

(1) the dimensions are about 0.25" longer in both directions.

(2) the ridges are in different places. Note that the wood holder has a wooden ridge just below the top, right by the dark-slide. The standard holder has the ridge about a 1/2" farther from the top of the holder.

If anyone has an idea what these are for, I'd love to know!

Measure it in cm, and see if it might be the European version. Theirs I think is 18x24 cm or something like that.

Do these have a removable black metal insert? If so- they might be glass plate holders, which might fit some of the older plate cameras... just a guess!

Heya Aggie and John,

thanks for the ideas--I double checked the holders. No inserts for plates and an 8x10 print is just a smidge too big to lie flat. 18cm would be just about 7" wide, so I don't think that is the case.

The holders are stamped "8x10 Sterling Film".

I really wish I had a card from the dealer. All I know is that he is in Walnut Creek and will be at the next show...Can I wait 3 months on the off-chance of a refund?

Matt, those will fit my Folmer & Schwing 8X10 which I have ZERO holders for. I didn't even know they were different until this came up. I suppose if I restore that camera and make a user out of it I'd adapt a back that takes normal holders, but I'd love to have some originals too.

Well, that answers that question. I figured if anyone knew what these were, it would be Jim. I also figured if anyone had one of the cameras, it would be Jim.

Hmmm, I missed my opportunity. I shoulda figured a way to get Jim to sell me the F&S--Start the thread, "Well, I saw these at the camera show, and I was confused. I didn't buy them, and I don't know the dealer's name. Anyone know what they are for?" After Jim answered, I could work on the angle that he has a useless camera....but I could take it off his hands...

Darn Darn Darn!

In case you ever see these in the future--they seem to be more expensive than standard film holders

here is one auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7580151001

The ones I have are not Kodak and they have more modern (plastic/metal) darkslides rather than the wood ones. Still, looks like the F&S people are in desparate need for the correct film holders.
