I'm off to Ottawa tomorrow the 2nd of December for a week of mixed vacation and business.

I'm looking for some intriguing architecture, museums and exciting cityscape and wonder if anyone would be able to give me some tips?

The main idea was to bring my RB67, 6x8 back and 50 or 65mm and perhaps a shorter Gitzo systematic. Although I do like shooting hand held as I often travel quite light but I could squeeze in a shorter systematic if needed.
My Nikon F3 with a 35/1.4 will follow along for light street photography.

Ohh and some analog stores I need to visit?

I remember visiting Ottawa as a kid. The government buildings are beautiful, as mentioned the Chateau Laurier, such a beautiful hotel, maybe the Royal Mint, seems like there's a war museum with some WWII German aircraft.

The National gallery has a photographic section
  • Hog's Back Park.
  • Rideau Canal at University of Ottawa Campus.
  • Love Lock Pedestrian Bridge.
  • Major's Hill Park.
  • Dow's Lake Pavilion.
  • Downtown
  • Chateau Laurier
  • Supreme court
  • Anywhere on the river

Great list! I'll keep it for future reference.

Oh and the canal that the British constructed to guard supplies in case the USA tried to invade. That may come in handy yet! 😳

Don't worry! The mosquitos are more of a deterrent than the canal!

I took a road trip to Ottawa about 2009 and I lost a pint of blood every time I filled-up my gas tank.

There is a lot of interesting things to see within walking distance of Parliament Hill and the Chateau Laurier. The Byward Market is a good place to stop for lunch or dinner with lots of choices of food types. If you are into museums and the like there are plenty in Ottawa and Hull.

There are three camera stores that should stock analogue items on Bank Street in the downtown core for you to check out. Enjoy your flight.

In addition to Cowan's list:
  • Sparks St has some nice art deco buildings and the old post office at the corner with Elgin St.
  • The Chaudiere hydro electric dam is a nice place to see wild water. It has easy access for pedestrians nowadays and is a short walk from downtown.
  • Alexandra Bridge with the Museum of History across the river in Gatineau.
  • Museum of Nature
  • War museum (i.m.o. ugly brutalist but it suits the "topic" 😄)
  • Tour Eiffel Bridge in Gatineau.
For film and anything analog, visit Galaxy Camera at 525 Bank Street.
Photo lab: GPC Labworks, 273 Bank Street
Bridgehead (various locations) has good coffee at European strength.

Enjoy your stay!

Hello again.
Down on firm ground again.
The weather and I will be best mates - it’s like home.

Now I really have to stop by Galaxy for a visit. I might even spot a flag waving crowd as well then.
Thanks.

The house commons is great but there are two construction cranes present.

If you are a wildlife photographer there is a home for raccoons behind the building. (I am not kidding🙂)

Hi all

I though I need to give a short report.
Ottawa is a lovely place with amazingly friendly citizens.
Very intriguing mix of architecture.
Although the cold wet snowy weather - pretty much like at home - somewhat restricted my photography and my work schedule got more intense than expected.

Anyway I managed to do a few rolls of 120 and a 135 as well.
But not to the extent I hoped for.

Bridgehead did really have great coffee at "European strength" :D
And I did see a raccoon as well but during my early morning runs along the canal.

Thank you all for your kind directions and recommendation,
