I'd love to see a workshop set up that would include a host of subject matter such as the zone system, filter usage (for color film) a more in-depth shop on LF shifts, tilts, swings, etc. The zone system I know a bit about...but not all. I use filters with b&W...but not much on color film, and for architecture, I mostly use the rise and fall of the front standard..but never touch the other controls.... and I think there are others out there that know a bit..but not all of these subjects. So, I'm thinking about one day to cover all these items and then go out and shoot late in the day. Any thoughts? ...or any other short topics?

I'm willing to host said workshops, based on school calendar issues of course but, being a bear of little brain, I wouldn't be able to provide much actual content. Any knowledgeable folk out there that want a site for a workshop in the western 'burbs of Beantown? PM me to discuss details if you want to get it set up before announcing it.

I am interested in a practical session on the zone system. I have only read about it and dont know if I use it correctly. But, it will just be great if I can hang around and learn. I shoot MF and 35mm though. I am always on for shooting some rolls with a bunch of like minded ppl.

I ain't none expurt, but I does have sum knollege of LF moovments!
But seriously folks... set a date and I'll try to be there, barring any conflicts with happenings at the VPC - which makes Sundays better for me.

So what is the final vote here? is there going to be a workshop ? I would like to learn how to use a spot meter and the zone system to get the correct exposure. I have a spot meter and use it from time to time but I dont know if I am doing it correcly. Usually I spot meter+zone and compare with the camera's TTL meter if I am way off I pick the cameras metering. It will be great help if someone is willing to share the knowledge.

Well, so far we have Gene offering to talk about LF movements and a couple of people asking about Zone system and exposure... Doesn't sound like we could call it a workshop yet, does it?

What we need is someone who actually wants to teach one. Maybe is we pony up and offer an honorarium? Just a thought.

U mean pay a $$ fee ? beer ? I dont mind paying for a good lesson/practice

I would like to keep these gatherings informal and free. There are NE-APUG'ers who use the Zone system and spot meters who can help other members.
I don't know what the weather is going to be like in the next couple of months - this is New England after all and weather prognostication is a very risky venture on good days. And water levels at the Quabbin are VERY high. So a practical field session may not happen until mid or late April.
Lets see if other members step up to demonstratre their skills.

Count me in. Any knowledge I can glean from the folks here is appreciated. I've started shooting mostly 6x7 MF, and would also like to learn Zone system basics, filter usage for b+w, and spot meter usage. Even some tips on good composition would be great. (Or anything else photography related).

Even the opportunity to shoot with seasoned veterans of photography is a blessing. I am in the waltham area, anyone interested in shooting in boston (freedom trail may be), sunset from harvard bridge on a weekend, email me 'manjo at manjo.net. I can do sundays. Winter I think will be a good time to aviod tourists in touristy areas (heh .. I am sort of a tourist myself to NE)

I'm in Franklin, so not too far away. I wouldn't mind shooting on a sunny day in Boston, but I'm not overly fond of being cold. And I'm not a "seasoned veteran", but any shooting I can do is fun. I never feel like I get out and shoot enough.

As Whitey and I have stated a few times, we both are willing to avail the facilities we respectively are associated with (the VPC = me; and the school where Whitey teaches), but others have to step up and organize these events.
Besides working a full time job in a warehouse, I volunteer my curatorial services to the VPC. I will be down to the Center for the next seven Saturdays, not to mention meetings, receptions etc. I don't have a whole lot of time for my own photogy.
So please, if you would like to see something happen, step up and organize the event.
I don't want this to sound like a rant, so to put it in perspective here's an event that happened when I was associated with the old ZONE Art Center in Springfield:
A group of teachers asked to meet with a couple of us board members. So Ron M. and myself (Co-Chairs of the Artistic Committee - big name for curators) met with them. They said we should do this, and do that, work with this group and that.
Ron and I said "All well and fine. We both are volunteers. We both have full-time jobs. We both have families. And we both have very little time to pursue our own artwork. And that all the other volunteers at ZONE were in the same predicament."
We then invited these teachers to join our board and head up whatever activities to work with school children they perceived as neccessary. Never heard from them again!
Moral of the story... if you want to see something happen, make it happen.

Ok...so if this next meeting is to deal with large format portrait photography, then we need someone who deals with LF and someone who deals with portrait work to organize the day. I don't think it has to mean that they have to get there very early to organize...but instead they would work together (thru email, phone, etc) and come up with a schedule of events. This also doesn't have to mean that they will "teach" the given subject matter...because there are many who use LF and others who do some form of portraiture, but they can step up to the plate and do the organizing and scheduling.

Other things like the zone system, photographing architecture, landscapes, etc, can be done at a later date.
