I have this really weird error while scanning Orwo Wolfen NP100 B&W film in Nikon Coolscan V with the SA-21 auto feeder. As always, I cut the film into 6 frame strips and feed into SA-21. The NP100 strip can be fed into SA-21, but when I start scanning, this error pops out. And the film gets stuck inside the feeder. When I power down and power up the scanner again, the film strip does eject automatically during the scanner bootup process.

It seems to be very reproduceable, and this error only occurs to Orwo/Wolfen NP100 film. I processed three rolls of film in one tank (Orwo NP100, Orwo UN54, and Ilford Pan F), and the other two rolls of film have none of the same problem. I have never had this problem before this NP100 roll, and no problem since with other film (6 rolls of C41 or B&W).

I'm wondering if the Orwo NP100 film is:
- Especially slippery?
- Have a different base color/reflection that messes up with the three optical sensors inside SA-21 feeder?
- Degradation of SA-21 and its rollers/sensors?

I don't know if any of you have encountered similar problems with Nikon CoolScan (SA-21) and particular type of film?

In the end, I have to scan this particular NP100 roll in my Epson V700 flatbed.

That is odd?

I had an equally odd experience with a strip of color negative film on mine, as well as my colleagues Coolscan 5000. He had this strip that would error out - can't remember exactly the error as this was early 2000 when this scanner was released. So he passed it for me to try and it would error on mine too. For some reason, I tried feeding it in reverse order - instead of frame 1-2-3-4, I inserted it frame 4-3-2-1 and it would scan perfectly fine. Maybe something to try?

I've since scanned tens of thousands of frames with my Coolscan since and no other issues found. Good luck!

Do these films have the standard perforations or cine perforations? I haven't used the NP 100, but the pictures of it online show what looks like normal KS perforations. 🤔

I glanced at both NP100 and UN54, and it seems both have normal perforation. And the SA-21 loader uses several rubber rollers to grab the film strip and transport. I thought NP100 and UN54 are almost the same film, except one additional anti-hilation layer.
