Does anyone have the original software for the Epson 4990 available somewhere?

I just picked up one cheap, but there's no software with it. I got the drivers from the Epson site, and they claim you can order the original software, too. But I can't get it to take an order for it on check out. Can't tell if they've got a shopping cart problem or if it's no longer available. Or maybe I'm stupid.

Anyway, I figured I'd ask. Or is it better to spring for something like Vuescan?

Thanks,
Michael

Ciao Michael,

I have the original disks for my 4990. However, I'm using the latest drivers from the epson site which includes 'epson scan'. My machine also came with Silverfast Ai ( or something like that ), but it will not run on my Vista 64 system.

I don't think you'll need the original software disks & I'm not really sure why I still have them.

OK, let me give that a whirl and see if it does the trick. I suppose I could also spring for Vuescan, too.

Earlier someone had suggested just using the OEM software with an Epson until I can swing a real drum scanner. I got the 4990 pretty inexpensively.

without doubt I recommend you download the latest version if you know how. There are updates to Epson scan over time and they're worth having over the early versions.

Its up to you if you want to pay for it but I've not personally found benefits in what I do with alternative drivers.

I went to this link:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...=49164280&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows

and downloaded the drivers ... forget about the shipping cart, just click on the links for what you want

Michael, I bought a used 4990 about a year ago and it too came without the original disk. I just d/l'd the drivers from Epson's site and that's all I needed to get the scanner up and running.

I actually like Epson Scan -- in fact, I like it better than Vuescan for one basic reason. When having a batch of images scanned in Epson Scan, I can have individual adjustments done to each photo, whereas as far as I've been able to determine, when doing a batch scan in Vuescan, it is not possible to individualize settings for each image. This is kind of a big deal to me, and enough where I'll just continue to use Epson Scan.

Regarding Silverfast, I've tried it as well, and I consider its user interface to be horrid. But that's a matter of personal taste. Still, once again, enough for me to just stick with good ol' Epson Scan.

Incidentally, I recall running into a similar problem as you when I first got my scanner. I was interested in the original disk because of the other stuff that should have been on it. In my case, I have an Epson 3170 scanner that, on its disk, it came with a cool little image copy function that turned my scanner and laser printer into a copy machine. I liked that, and now that I've idled the 3170, I kind of miss not having that with my 4990.

Oh well.
