Oriental (paper)

Hello everybody,
i'd like to try the Oriental. The famous fine art paper. As far as you know is it a bad thing if i use it with chemicals like the ilford multigrade and the rapid fixer ? Does the Oriental, in order to get the best out of it, need being processed with its own chemicals ?

You can use any chemicals. Like any photographic paper, it will perform slightly differently in different developers, but there is no inherent advantage with any one brand's chemicals. I develop my paper (of several different brands) in an Ansco formula and Ansco is no longer even in business.

The famous fine art paper is now the new Oriental paper. Those who use the new version say that it's not really the same paper. Use any chemical for good results, they will all give subtle differences.

I use LPD 1+1 successfully with Oriental VC both neutral and warm tone

I've tried that paper too, but wasn't blown away by it. As the others stated, it's not the same as paper of that name from 25-30+ years ago. I've tried it with Ilford Multigrade and Ansco 130 (my main paper developer) and various toners, and it does a good job, just not anything overly special as far as I've seen. As Jim stated, you can use any paper developer with this paper.

I used Oriental Seagull (graded) for almost 20 years with a cold light. When I got my new V54 lamp, I tried some VC papers. I compared the Ilford and Forte VC papers and the new Oriental, both graded and VC, and wasn't impressed with the Oriental, not much separation in the low end, muddy shadows. I never even finished using what I had.
Had I tried split filtering with the Oriental, I might have gotten better results, but I just never tried it.
