I am trying to come up with an organizational strategy for all of the negatives that are starting to grow in number.

I was wondering if some of you would share how you organize you negatives for future reference.

Subject matter, camera/lens, film, date etc.

Currently I am keeping every negative, good or bad, and filing them in a 3 ring binder in clear plastic negative holders

What your doing is exactly what I settled on after trying a bunch of things. Every single neg has a negative number - roll and frame and sheet. Ordered by date.

The twist that I through in is I have them indexed in Apple aperture as well. Either with a contact sheet scan or low res JPG scan of the negative so I can get at them and create a various relational organizational structures on top of my ONE physical filing system.

Here are a few thoughts on it

I organize the physical negatives by date shot.

I have an excel spreadsheet set up and can sort it in various ways, by topic/subject, date shot, film type, film format, color, black & white using the headers to sort.
