It was my understanding that you only pay VAT once in an items life.
If the camera was originally bought by a pro. He would have been a registered business, so would have claimed the VAT back. Once the equipment goes into the hands of a private individual, VAT would be chargeable, but only on the reduced (second hand) cost.
If the equipment was originally private owned, and VAT paid. No further VAT would be required to be paid.
Or so I thought.
IANATL......
Do you pay VAT on a used car if bought from a dealer?
What if you buy something from the classified ads, do you have to pay VAT on that? How would anyone know that a sale has taken place?

What Customs and exercise have to say
I started to read this, and then realised why I'm not overkeen on starting my own small business in the UK
I just waded through it, and my understanding of it is, if it is supplied to an address in a none E.U. country to a none EU national It's zero rated and not liable for V.A.T, because the recipient will be liable for his own country's import duty, but as I wrote to the OP, check with Greys they will have done it thousands of times. What Customs and exercise have to say

...Also, Nikon USA has this strict policy of not wanting to do repairs on Nikon equipment that comes from overseas.

"Are you absolutely sure? Because, I never had a problem getting a Nikon repaired by Nikon Germany."
This is what I have read regarding "Nikon USA," I have no personal experience with this issue. I have read that Nikon USA will not even repair gray market Nikon equipment for money.
