It was my understanding that you only pay VAT once in an items life.

If the camera was originally bought by a pro. He would have been a registered business, so would have claimed the VAT back. Once the equipment goes into the hands of a private individual, VAT would be chargeable, but only on the reduced (second hand) cost.

If the equipment was originally private owned, and VAT paid. No further VAT would be required to be paid.

Or so I thought.
IANATL......

Do you pay VAT on a used car if bought from a dealer?

What if you buy something from the classified ads, do you have to pay VAT on that? How would anyone know that a sale has taken place?

If it was being sold by a vatw registered business and the item was supposed to have vat applied to it, then yes. But most of the time classified ads are used by individuals to sell used items so it would have nothing to do with VAT.

As a VAT registered business or individual you have to keep records and declare your sales and purchases every month / quarter. As you would imagine there is a lot of scope for VAT fraud, which is why the penalties for this are very severe. You can receive a spot check any time from the VAT inspectors.

What Customs and exercise have to say

I started to read this, and then realised why I'm not overkeen on starting my own small business in the UK

Or anywhere else in the EU for that matter! VAT was supposed to be a simplification of the old Purchase Tax which we had in the UK previously, and initially, it was. However as is the nature of these things it has progressively become more and more arcane and complicated as a brief browse of that website reveals. Small businesses with a turnover below a set limit do not have to register for VAT, but the limit is low enough that you'd never get rich staying below it ...

I just waded through it, and my understanding of it is, if it is supplied to an address in a none E.U. country to a none EU national It's zero rated and not liable for V.A.T, because the recipient will be liable for his own country's import duty, but as I wrote to the OP, check with Greys they will have done it thousands of times.

Well, I finally sold my last DSLR. a Canon 1Ds Mark II. As soon as my funds clear on PayPal I will be able to buy a Nikon F6. As on right now, Grays is the only place that has one listed. I would prefer to buy one from KEH in Georgia, because that would probably be cheaper and easier for me. Also, Nikon USA has this strict policy of not wanting to do repairs on Nikon equipment that comes from overseas.

Are you absolutely sure? Because, I never had a problem getting a Nikon repaired by Nikon Germany. They repaired equipment I bought in the US without an issue. Nikon's website talks about worldwide service!

It's usually guarantees that they don't like honouring if you buy from a different country, this is more about trying to kill the "Gray market" that existed at one time. It's also why cameras often have different names/model numbers in the US.

This is what I have read regarding "Nikon USA," I have no personal experience with this issue. I have read that Nikon USA will not even repair gray market Nikon equipment for money.

You are trying to buy from the UK into the US. Call, and ask if this is a problem for them. I suspect, it won't.
