I'm afraid i'm not wrong. (Don't try to teach an old man to suck eggs):D

Well... you could first set the lever, then push the release, then insert a cable relea... uhmm... too late.

I think i didn't make it as clear as it should be.
The lever locks the shutter release button. Use it when you release by pressing the button with your finger, and the lever will keep the button depressed (and thus the rear shutter open) until you reset it.

But use a cable release, and the tip of that will not move the shutter release button, but push the rod the button too would push if it were used.
Let go of the cable release, and you'll hear the baffle doors slam shut, since there was only the pressure applied by the cable release to keep them open.
The locking lever than does absolutely nothing at all. It only locks the actual - then not used - shutter release button.

Since you must use a cable release for long exposures, the locking lever had no real use. It will not be missed.

If you happen not to have a cable release and you are using 1/2 1/4 1s it can be real useful. Just trying to be accurate.

Ps. The 501 does have a mirror pre-release I use it all the time. Don't get me wrong I love my 500 cm's and my 503 cw and my 501 cm - love um all - that is why I can't sell the old ones.

Mark ... Winding on after each exposure ... doesn't that result in accidental exposures? ... Or is there a shutter release lock in there somewhere on the CM?

Greg

This was a hurdle for me in the beginning too, but please get used to it. It avoids all kinds of issues and does not hurt camera or lens in any way. Cock the shutter after every exposure, film or no film, before taking the lens off, storage or use; make sure it's cocked!

One thing to be aware of is that if you are using the self timer it will not work with the cable release.

It will if you use a locking cable release.
Recommended anyway, if you don't want to stand or sit there keeping the darned thing pressed for long times.

Let's be real clear here -

If you have a locking cable release great - if you don't happen to have one or it is broken and you have a shutter lock lever here is what it does if you want it to:

Leave the shutter and the back doors open until you twist it - like a locking cable release. If you have a 501cm you don't have that - that is all.

I'm not arguing. But here's a tip:
Do use the locking lever. But instead of ending the exposure by returning the lever to "O", cover the lens (the old hat trick), and only after that touch the lever.
Do the same at the start of the exposure: cover the lens, press the shutter release, and wait a bit (1 second) before uncovering the lens.

But the locking cable release thing was in answer to the self-timer-doesn't-work-with-cable-release comment.

Just go out and use the silly thing!!! Too many scaremongerers on here that while their points maybe somewhat relevant if you are ham fisted, I learned my way through on a hasselblad many years ago without all this additional knowledge, and if you just use common sense, you should be good to go. RTFM.....Available from many sources on line and then post back here if you have any problems, or call David. He will help you..... It's been serviced arguably by the best in the business in the US so just go and use it.

Kevin ... I may just take you up on that offer some time. I'm sure I'll be scratching my head over stuff in the beginning.
Ralph ... Yep, will keep the shutter cocked ... It's just a simple routine ... I'm good with routine.
