I have used TF-4 fixer ever since moving to pyro developers about 15 years ago. It always has suspended snow-white chemicals at the bottom of the jug. These are easily suspended by shaking the jug. Then diluting them 1+3 with distilled water renders the working solution crystal clear.
This year, I received a 4-gallon case of TF-4 with a light orange layer at the bottom of the jugs. No amount of shaking and inverting the jug would even dislodge most of it from the bottom of the jug, no less put it into suspension. I concluded (prematurely) that it was contaminated with mold that was adhering the precipitate together. I attempted to pour the contents down the drain, but the orange mucoid sludge would not pass through. I eventually squeezed the sludge out by compressing the sides of the jug. Surprisingly, the material would break up between my thumb and fore-finger. I was encouraged that I could remediate this new situation. I ordered a narrow paint-mixing attachment (ALLWAY HM5N Helix Paint & Epoxy Mixer, Narrow) and a magnetic stirrer (ANZESER Magnetic Stirrer Magnetic Mixer 3000 RPM with Stir Bar Max Stirring Capacity 3000mL, Black). Total cost, about $30. The paint stirrer, inserted into a variable-speed drill, will break up the sludge without shaking and inverting the jug. The $20 magnetic stirrer is just to ensure that the working fixer is completely dissolved, leaving no tiny spots on the negatives.
So far, the fixer seems to dissolve completely, no mycelium, no detritus. So don't despair if your TF-4 looks tainted. Don't know why it's orange, but it seems easy to remediate.

OK but somewhat expensive at $30 plus time. There has to be a problem there that should not be there, surely?

Actually, the $20 magnetic stirrer is something that I needed anyway because I mix my own developers (D23, Barry Thornton, FX1) and it comes in handy for getting the TF-4 clear in a matter of minutes. The $10 paint stirrer is really the required accessory, to get the goo to mix. PF doesn't seem alarmed by the orange goo issue. I moved to TF-5 as it is also pyro-friendly, but I have used the TF-4 for so long, I didn't want to change procedures even a little.

Thanks Jeffrey. it was just that as I have never heard of this problem with TF-4 in the past I just wondered what had happened. So far no-one seems to have picked up on this but an explanation of the sludge might be helpful from other users

I was going to write to them, but their website directed me here. Since the product didn't seem to be defective, I thought it better to let potential users know not to put it down the drain.

jvo,
I'll try to explain myself here without getting histrionic. My intent was to tell current users of PF-4 that they should not be concerned about possible orange-colored precipitate in their jugs of stock solution. I read on the PF website to discuss things on phototrio. I didn't contact them because I didn't want to sound like I was complaining about a problem. I just wanted to post a "public service announcement" that users need not dispose their stock fixer if the orange color suggested that it might be a bad batch. I will go into lurk mode instead of contributing member mode now.

Based on your last post, Jeffery this will at best seem redundant and at worse a signal to not bother with Photrio as it just seems to make more of your non problem than it needs to. However it seems strange to me that PF suggests you ask Photrio about what is clearly a problem with TF-4- their product.

If TF-4 was depositing an orange sludge and no-one else has ever reported such an issue it does suggest to me that this isn't normal, so referring you to Photrio for an explanation seems to me to be what we in the U.K. call a "cop-out" which means a sort of denial of responsibility for it

If you are happy and it never happens again then fine but if this is a fault of TF-4 then it seems likely that unless your container of TF-4 was truly a one-off then it might affect others who deserve to know the cause and what PF is doing about. Only PF can do this

I didn't ask the questions to offend or cause you to lurk!

Thanks for your concern for the community - it also doesn't substitute for the manufacturer properly explaining what's going on with their product. As a TF-5 user, I think they should be involved. No histrionics needed.
