What's an Optometrist in English ?

Is it an under qualified ophthalmologist, or rather his or her shop assistant ?

Not quite, but close.
An optometrist is licensed to diagnose but not touch. A four year undergraduate and a four year stint at a college of optometry are required.

An ophthalmologist is a Medical doctor that specializes in eye care.

Scott, I used to print for an ophthalmologist who coincidentally is one hell of a fine photographer. I have two of his (my) prints hanging in my living room (he signed them for me).

It's been fifteen years but I recall that he was very friendly. If you would like his contact information, feel free to P.M. me.

Thanks Tom.

In the UK an Ophthalmologist is someone who tests and treats your eyes, diagnosing medical complaints, prescribing corrective spectacles etc, i.e. what you call an Optometrist. He or she then refers you to an Ophthalmic surgeon or other doctor if they detect a medical condition.

Ahh, UK/US terminology differentials!

Same confusion reigns in my field. In the UK, an anaesthetist is a medical doctor who specializes in the perioperative care of surgical patients and in the administration of anaesthetics. That same person in the US is an anesthesiologist; while an anesthetist is an advanced-practice nurse (somewhat analogous to a nurse practitioner) who administers anesthetics with a greater or lesser degree of consultation with a physician, as required by the state in which s/he practices.

Now, what was Scott's original question?

Hello Mike:

Now, what was Scott's original question?

I am looking for a eye doctor to talk about photographer that need eye correction, the use of diopters, shoot with or with glasses and that kind of eye related stuff.

So an Optometrist or a Opthamologist would be GREAT.

If any body knows of such a photography minded eye doctor please let me know.

Thanks

Scott

I don't know any more!

When I was growing up we had opticians and dentists. Now we have optometrists, othodontists, opthalmologists and all sorts of other un-pronounceable variations.

Actually, the chap in our town who just sells glasses (not qualified to do tests) does point out that he is not an optician.
