I.M.O. the pictures would seem to be able to sum up the Zeitgeist of an era whatever that might be Certainly in the U.K. there are still people alive who on seeing a picture of civilians in gas-masks will be able to describe the "time of the "Blitz " in detail. If you don't think a picture sums up an era take a look at the heart-rending shot of the little Japanese-American girl with a lost look on her way to a camp in the U.S. hinterland.

There a picture is being short-changed when it is said to be worth a thousand words

Interesting article gr82bart but I doubt these stories represent an era any more than a series of wierd stories from today would represent our era. Wierd is just wierd no matter when it happens.
