One issue solved now Nikon Lens questions.

If you saw my Another what camera should I buy question thread you may know I was looking into manual focus 35mm cameras. Well the photo gods brought me to a beautiful Nikon F2 with a DP2 finder at my local Camera shop today. It looks to be well taken care of, the store manager said the meter did not work, but I changed the batteries and now the finder lights up so maybe it does.

Now I have a nice camera body and no lenses. Looking at used Nikon lenses they all look foreign to me. I am guessing any Nikon lens with the Rabbit Ear will meter on my F2, and any AI lens will mount. So I could put an AI, AI-S, or, AI-E on it? Just want to make sure before I go and buy some lenses.

I just ordered a Nikon Ai 50mm f1.4 and a Nikon AiS f3.5 35-105 zoom from Keh. I even paid for UPS overnight (I want to shoot my new Nikon!). I will tell every one how it works out.

Congratulations on your new F2! Unfortunately the F2 does not come with a much needed disclaimer indicating that the use of such an outstanding camera coupled with prime Nikkor lenses can lead to NAA (or Nikon Aquisition Addiction).

My 35-105 Nikkor is very sharp, and I think it is one of the best zooms Nikon ever made. It also gives better performance than my 24-120 and 28-200 AF Nikkors.

I own and have used extensively two of those Nikkor 35-105 AIS gems. They have never disappointed me. I even shot a couple of weddings and bar mitzvahs with them. I also have two of the 35-105 AF models, plus a 35-105 AF-D. They are all very, very sharp. The AIS versions are also built like tanks, I might add, but balance and handle perfectly on an N2000, FA or FE2.

"NAA" has already kicked in. God save me! My lenses are sitting on my kitchen table and I am itching to get home from work. I am already thinking to myself “Maybe I should get that second F2, or that F3HP at the camera shop before it is gone, and what should I get for a wide angle, a long lenses, and maybe a 100-300 zoom?”

Now what should I shoot first…

Quit while you still have hope! Whatever you do, don't touch a Nikon F3HP or a Nikkor 35mm 2.0 AIS! It will only lead to wanting to own them immediately. The F3HP (especially when coupled with the MD4 motor drive) has an unaturally solid and professional feel, perfect balance, much too perfect in the hand to resist any temptation not to buy it. Also, the 35mm 2.0 AIS is very sharp and feels like it was meant for the F3HP. The F3HP has an allure not seen in any other Nikon camera! I can't seem to put mine down! I love my F with FTN finder, F2A, F100, FM2n, and even my five other Nikon DSLR's, but none compare to my F3HP!

It is probably not an issue, now that you have purchased lenses, but you don't need AI lenses with that camera, just make sure that it has the rabbit ears. Of course, when you find that you just can't help yourself and buy an F3 or FE2 it will be nice to have lenses that are fully compatible, so perhaps the AI versions are the best bet.

I am going to sell a very nice 28-85 3.5 AIS macro zoom lens with hood/filter very soon. This is a lovely all-around lens for outdoor use (or indoors with a flash). Let me know if you are interested.

Well I am going to be purchasing a 24mm lens soon, maybe a 135 soon after that and an FM2n is tempting me ALOT... A Hotshoe would be a nice thing.

Dave, find an AS-1 and you can have a hot shoe easily enough, they should be cheap, KEH has them for 2.50 (BGN) to 7.00 (EX), though you'll need to buy a few odds and ends to make up for the $12.00 or so shipping cost.

The beauty of Nikon is that there was so much made, that prices are pretty reasonable, even for lenses outside of the 28-50-135 trio. The 300mm ED-IF manual focus is down to reasonable, and wides out to 20mm won't kill your budget either.

On the other hand, the best cure for NAA is put them all in a bag and carry them around for a day. At that point you begin to think, "well, an FG with the 43/86 can't be all that bad, can it?"

That's high on the list of why my 35-105 is one of my favorite lenses. But a 20 is light too, and doesn't take up much room.

Actually it isn't.

I have a 43-86 NAI that I converted to AI a few years ago and it isn't bad. It's not a killer lens, but I found it more than acceptable and, yes, I did use it on an FG a few times.

My current bag weighs 27 pounds and is filled with only my "essential" Nikon equipment! Still no sign of a cure for NAA...

On a recent trip, I followed my own advice, to a point. I put the 24, 300, and F in the bag, then gave the rest of the space over to a C220 with 65 and 105 mm lenses.

End result: nice pictures, but wondering why I didn't take up weight-lifting in college. If I could get a true wide-angle for the C220, I'd leave the F behind entirely. Anyone got a biogon 38mm in shutter lying around? (I know; the real answer is split the difference and get a Norita-66 to replace both of them.)

well, if it makes you feel better, my stantard travel case for my 35mm outfit weighs 67#, and I still leave a few things out. Then again, the tamrac bag only has a small portion of that in it at any given time, but I don't worry about what I left at home, as all the glass comes with me.

This Nikon outfit covers most situations for me: F100 and F80 (for its built-in flash.) Lenses: 20/2.8AF-D, 24-120AF-D (I know it's not the best, but the focal length range is wonderful and it's not too big), and the unbelievable 80-400AF-D-VR. Of course, one could always add the 28/1.4AF-D for available light, if money were no object.

Congrats, you have the best of the Nikon slr's and probably one of the best 35mm slr's ever made.
Just give in and keep buying the stuff, you just can't have too many!

Hold off on the 135 just yet. Take a look at the 105 f/2.5 first. It is an impressive lens, much more so than the 135.
