An awful lot of us started out working under the same circumstances. It's not all that big a deal as you seem to be making it. However, I would inveigh against the gallon wine box--if your friends are like mine from grad school days, they won't notice the difference and will end up commenting thoughtfully on the bouquet of your developer!
Oh, I'd label it with poison and all, and keep it in the closet. I bought a new box today that is all silvery. The other one I had I think I will put Dektol in because it's cheaper and tends to work even after it starts turning all brown. It will be a good experiment.

Back when I was an undergraduate I labeled my developers' containers boldly with names like "Horse Serum", "Manure Tea" etc. This wasn't to keep other students from drinking them, just to keep them from being used. I guess most people would be deterred from drinking them also.
