OMG, I am buying a Pinkham and Smith VS #2 IV

Holy macaroni I just paid a deposit for a Pinkham and Smith VS #2 IV. All I need now is to raise the rest of the funds, and then buy a replacement 8x10 after I sold the Tachihara (I was going to save up for a Chamonix Alpinist) but I don't know any more.

Sorry but it isnt the lens or the camera that creates the photograph and while a pinkham Smith might be nice it's you who makes the difference...

Sure, I shot over 1000+ sheets of 4x5 portraits in the last 5 years, most of them with the Cooke PS945, so as they say, this is not my first rodeo.

Thanks Roger. The Alpinist comes in either horizontal only OR vertical only, and if I were to purchase it, definitely the portrait model. Moot now though, no way I can afford that now, haha.

Sometimes you have to strike when the opportunity arises. I just put down a deposit on a 5x12 camera from Chamonix that I wont see until later this year. I have been watching for a used 5x12 for the last 3 years, and Chamonix finally agreed to make one (or more if anyone else is interested).

Well if this shelter in place ever ends I have an 8x10 and a blank lens board out if you want to try you new lens out. Nothing fancy but a good solid camera, it’s a Eastman Kodak 2D.

Thanks Roger. Hey, you are in SF! That might work out. I have to finish paying for the lens first, (ha ha), which I should be able to do within a week, but I won't be able to get a camera for at least a month. I have now decided to go with the Gibellini ACN810, as I have two of Gibellini 4x5. It's a bit more than the alternatives, but it will be better in the long run.

So..... I MIGHT take you up on the offer. Soical distancing might make the whole affair challenging, but we will see. Currently the lens is sitting on Jim's Kodak 2D so I am sure it will feel right at home!!

I have NEVER regretted taking a photo. At worst, it's $5 bucks of 4x5 (or $10 for 8x10 :-O) down the drain, but I have regretted many times not taking a photo. I mean, not like my photos are great or anything, but it's for me.

So it goes with other stuff. When lightning strikes, grab a hunk of it.

I think that the market might improve here pretty shortly.
Lots of folks getting their $1200 and possibly some also getting tax refunds...
Nothing like a whole bunch of people sitting home isolated and possibly bored, with a small windfall burning a hole in their pockets.

Richard, we should stay in touch. Even if you get your camera before the social distancing is lifted it still would be fun to meet up. I would certainly be willing to sit for you. I also have film and holders I could provide. Yes I’m in SF, and even after the SDO is lifted I'll have plenty of time. I’m currently on disability recovery from sciatic neuropathy that’s a complication from hip surgery that has resulted in foot drop. By all accounts it will be a long slow recovery. I am able to get around a bit but no way I’m going back to my job as a carpenter anytime soon. Silver lining of course is that I wouldn’t be working right now anyway.

The Gibellini looks very nice. One question is the Sinar size lens board big enough for the Pinkham and Smith? Ok 2 questions, what are you thinking for a shutter?

Hi Roger... I don't know? I hope the Sinar is big enough. Better ask Jim, heh. I believe Jim is sending me the Packard shutter with it. So that's the plan.

At worst, I am pretty consistent with "quick hand lens cap" to about 1/25 of a second. Tai Chi helps (seriously, we move slowly because then we can move fast).

I did find one reference on LFPF that the od of the lens barrel is 3 1/2”, otherwise I couldn’t find any dimensions online. My Sinar shutter which is a f5.6 model is just a hair under 3”. Sounds like the Packard might. be the way to go. I’m on the hunt for a Packard for my 2D, but the size with the 3 1/2’ opening seems to be hard to find. There was one one eBay but it was a little rough and now it’s sold. I know I can by one new but they are pricey.

Well, I keep checking eBay... I'd kinda like a Fuji 150mm for 4x5... but then, my work is slowly drying up... the future looks a little fuzzy to me!
